Job summary

The Space and Geophysics Laboratory at the University of Texas seeks a Systems Engineer with a process and methodology focus to support GNSS projects for government sponsors. You will guide requirements, translate into designs, and lead cross‑team work across the lifecycle.

This exempt, 40‑hour week role at the Pickle Research Campus involves mentoring junior staff, delivering documentation, and collaborating with stakeholders on scope, estimates, and schedules.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, applied science, or engineering.
  • Three years of relevant professional work experience developing systems requirements and designs.
  • Experience designing, developing, evaluating, and supporting large and complex systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to convey technical detail to diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a strong team orientation.
  • US Citizen: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information

Responsibilities

  • Elicit systems scope and requirements from stakeholders for designs.
  • Develop, document, and refine systems engineering processes, including requirements management, traceability, and decomposition.
  • Lead backlog management and decompose projects into components and actionable units within Agile.
  • Communicate work process, products, and results, including documentation, written reports, and briefs to stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders throughout the life-cycle of systems definition, design, implementation, integration, and deployment.
  • Perform engineering estimates, guide project schedules, and identify dependencies.
  • Conduct engineering evaluations such as trade studies, reliability analysis, functional analysis, risk analysis assessments.
  • Mentor junior engineering staff, technicians, and students

Overview

The Space and Geophysics Laboratory (SGL) delivers capabilities to government customers for a variety of applications, from real-time data-intensive network operations to standalone remote field systems. We seek a systems engineer with a process and methodology focus to support GNSS projects for government sponsors and partners. This role concentrates on the systems engineering lifecycle: eliciting scope, managing requirements, decomposing designs, and planning work across multiple project teams. You will elicit systems scope, guide requirements, translate requirements into designs, decompose systems into actionable units, and advise stakeholders throughout the life-cycle.

Responsibilities
  • Elicit systems scope and requirements from stakeholders for use in systems designs
  • Develop, document, and refine systems engineering processes, including requirements management, traceability, and decomposition
  • Lead backlog management and project decomposition into components and actionable units of work within an Agile process
  • Communicate work process, products, and results, including documentation, written reports, and briefs to stakeholders
  • Coordinate with stakeholders throughout the life-cycle of systems definition, design, implementation, integration, and deployment
  • Perform engineering estimates, guide project schedules, and identify dependencies
  • Conduct engineering evaluations such as trade studies, reliability analysis, functional analysis, risk analysis assessments
  • Mentor junior engineering staff, technicians, and students
  • Other related functions as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, applied science, or engineering
  • Three years of relevant professional work experience developing systems requirements and designs
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop, evaluate, and support large and complex systems
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to convey technical detail to diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a strong team orientation
  • US Citizen: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information
Preferred Qualifications
  • Post-graduate degree in systems engineering or related fields; Five years relevant experience
  • Experience with INCOSE practices, traceability, and lifecycle models; Agile project management using Jira or similar tools
  • Experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools and Structurizr
  • GNSS observation and navigation data experience
  • GPA: 3.0
