Job description

About the Team:

Taarafocuses on increasing access to abundant and affordable internet with beams of light (Wireless Optical Communication). Like fiber, but without the cables, Taara uses wireless optical communication to transmit data at super high speeds through the air as a very narrow, invisible beam. Taara has helped bridge a particularly stubborn connectivity gap between Brazzaville (Republic of Congo) and Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo) across the Congo river. More on this topic is available here and more about Taara here.

About the Role:

Taara is seeking a hardware lead responsible for bringing advanced wireless optical communication system designs from concept to product. The candidate is responsible for leading a multidisciplinary team with backgrounds including photonics, electronics, control systems and system integration. In collaboration with other leads, the engineer is responsible for architecting a cutting-edge wireless optical communication system.

The position seeks highly motivated individuals that enjoy working in a small dynamic team environment, with a passion for solving challenging problems that can lead to high-impact advances in technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a multidisciplinary R&D hardware team developing next generation technologies.
  • Own and drive the hardware design roadmap and hardware technical direction.
  • Demonstrate strong cross-functional leadership, team management, execution, influencing skills, and executive summary communication skills.
  • Responsible for hardware system design, integration, and testing including supporting the building of required lab capabilities.
  • Identify and manage external contract manufacturers and vendors for rapid development and production.
  • Mentor and coach other team members.
  • Be motivated by making the world a better place through technology, and wanting to be part of a team that makes this happen.

What you should have:

  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering or similar discipline.
  • 10+ years of industry experience in hardware engineering.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams.
  • Deep technical domain expertise in photonics and electronic design including understanding of the state of industry to set strategy.
  • Knowledge in high-speed and mixed signal circuit design.

It would be great if you also had these:

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in photonics integrated circuit.
  • Experience with embedded systems.
