Job summary

MITRE's Systems and Operations Department in the Center for Engineering and Analysis is seeking a full‑time student intern to apply MBSE and traditional systems engineering across the system development lifecycle. • Must be a student enrolled full-time in an accredited degree-seeking program.
• Experience with system design, architecture modeling, requirements development, interface analysis, integration planning, verification and validation, and technical documentation.
• Familiarity with MBSE and traditional systems engineering approaches.
• U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain the required clearance.

The Systems and Operations Department (L626) within MITRE’s Systems Engineering Division in the Center for Engineering and Analysis delivers innovative, mission-focused solutions using a multidisciplinary systems engineering approach to address sponsor challenges critical to national security and public sector missions. Our core focus areas include mission integration, lifecycle systems engineering, and acquisition systems engineering. Our teams develop, assess, and transition engineering solutions, provide strategic technical vision, and deliver data-informed recommendations that enable sponsor mission success from tactical through enterprise levels.

Job Responsibilities:

• Apply Traditional Systems Engineering (TSE) and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) across the system development lifecycle
• Translate mission needs, operational constraints, and capability gaps into system concepts, designs, and technical solutions
• Develop and refine system architectures, requirements, interfaces, data flows, and integration dependencies
• Support integration, testing, verification, validation, deployment planning, and technical transition
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on technical deliverables, documentation, and presentations

Basic Qualifications:

• Sustained excellence in academic performance
• Must be a student enrolled full-time in an accredited degree-seeking program in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Computer Engineering or a related degree and continue to be enrolled full-time the semester following the internship
• Experience with system design, system architecture modeling, requirements development, interface analysis, integration planning, verification and validation, and technical documentation
• Familiarity with both MBSE and traditional systems engineering approaches, including requirements analysis, functional decomposition, interface control, trade studies, risk analysis, technical reviews, and engineering decision support
• U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain the required U.S. government security clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

• Familiarity with model-based systems engineering (MBSE), SysML, or tools such as Cameo, MagicDraw, Rhapsody, or Sparx EA through coursework or projects.
• Exposure to system architectures, interface modeling, or diagrams describing system structure, behavior, and requirements.
• Coursework or project experience related to system integration, testing, verification and validation, or deployment planning.
• Interest in federal acquisition processes, market research, technical evaluations, and transitioning technologies into operational use.
• Coursework or project exposure to digital engineering, cloud computing, data platforms, cybersecurity, communications, networking, or artificial intelligence.

Salary compensation range and midpoint:

$46,500 - $58,000 - $69,500 Annual
