Job summary

Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems is seeking a Staff Systems Engineer with Common Product Line and DO-178C experience to support embedded avionics and mission software throughout the product lifecycle.

In this role you will translate customer needs into robust requirements, develop interfaces and MBSE artifacts, and lead certification activities while collaborating with cross‑functional teams. A current active Secret clearance is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering required.
  • Minimum 9 years of professional systems‑engineering experience or 7 years with a Master’s degree.
  • Experience with development of software requirements and collaboration with software engineers for embedded software.
  • Experience with avionics systems and software programs and DO-178C specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, decompose, and maintain system, software, and subsystem requirements with traceability.
  • Define interfaces and develop Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
  • Develop and review algorithms and technical solutions meeting performance, safety, and mission objectives.
  • Allocate requirements across software, hardware, integration, and test disciplines.
  • Apply MBSE and systems architecture principles to solve complex challenges.
  • Collaborate with hardware, software, integration/test, safety, and program teams to resolve issues and validate performance.

We are seeking a Staff Systems Engineer with Common Product Line and DO-178C experience to support the full product lifecycle of safety‑critical embedded systems.

The Work

As a Staff Systems Engineer, you will play a key role in transforming customer needs and mission objectives into robust technical solutions. You will support the development and certification of embedded avionics and mission software, with a strong emphasis on software and system requirements.

Key Responsibilities Include
  • Develop, decompose, and maintain system, software, and subsystem requirements, including high- and low-level requirements and bidirectional traceability.
  • Define internal and external interfaces and develop and maintain Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
  • Develop and review algorithms and technical solutions that meet performance, safety, and mission objectives.
  • Allocate requirements across software, hardware, integration, and test disciplines.
  • Apply Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and systems architecture principles to solve complex technical challenges.
  • Collaborate with hardware, software, integration/test, safety, and program teams to resolve issues and validate system performance.
  • Support technical documentation, requirements verification, defect resolution, and lifecycle performance assessments.
  • Support DO-178C and related certification activities while ensuring compliance with applicable aerospace and safety standards.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship while helping drive quality, schedule, and cost objectives.

You are a systems engineering professional who enjoys solving complex problems and working across engineering disciplines. You bring experience developing requirements for embedded or safety-critical systems and can translate technical needs into clear, verifiable requirements and architectures. Experience with DO-178C, Common Product Line development, avionics, requirements traceability, interface definition, or MBSE will help you succeed in this role.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline (or equivalent).
  • Minimum9years of professional systems‑engineering experience or7years with a Master’s degree.
  • Experience with development of software requirements and working collaboratively with software engineers in the design, development, and test of embedded software
  • Experience with the design, integration and test of avionics systems and software operational programs
  • Experience with system design, requirements definition, and documentation standards that meet Common Product Line and DO-178C specifications.
  • Demonstrated experience with Agile development practices and working across cross‑functional teams.
Desired Skills
  • Experience in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) – Preferably CAMEO
  • Experience in engineering, particularly with cockpit, integrated avionics and mission system architectures, avionics, and sensor subsystems
  • Experience with the design, integration and test of avionics systems and software operational programs
  • Experience with integrating avionics hardware
  • Experience with Real Time Operating Systems
  • Proven ability to build strong customer relationships and communicate technical information to senior external stakeholders.
  • Current active Secret security clearance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and leadership abilities; capable of guiding large, high‑visibility programs and mentoring multidisciplinary teams.
Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $104900.00 - $194700.00

Represented full time employees accrue 6.67 hours of Vacation per month; accrue up to 52 hours of sick leave annually; receive at least 96 hours for holidays. PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year.
