Our pioneering and inventive spirit has enabled us to be at the forefront of many technological advancements in our nation's history — from the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean, to stealth bombers, to landing on the moon. We look for people who have bold new ideas, courage, and a pioneering spirit to join forces to invent the future, and have fun along the way. Our culture thrives on intellectual curiosity, cognitive diversity, and bringing your whole self to work — and we have an insatiable drive to do what others think is impossible. Our employees are not only part of history, they’re making history.

Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems Sector is seeking a Systems Engineer – Level 2 to join our team in Redondo Beach, CA.

Note: This position is contingent upon capturing program award(s) and obtaining and maintaining associated business and/or customer funding. The candidate must obtain final clearances and program access(es) within a reasonable period of time as determined by the company. Continued employment thereafter will be subject to maintenance at the level of clearance and program access required for the position in the future.

Role Overview

The Systems Engineer – Level 2 will work in tandem with a scrum team of other software and systems engineers responsible for defining the product vision, managing the product backlog, and ensuring that all features align with business objectives. You will work closely with cross‑functional teams to prioritize tasks and facilitate the timely delivery of high‑quality mission‑focused software system solutions. Development is done within the Agile paradigm using the Atlassian tool suite, so you will need to work within an Agile environment.

You will have experience in systems engineering with space domain knowledge, and you will define the requirements, interfaces, processes, use cases, protocols, schemas, and sequences of interactions driving the software design for Ground Segment Functions. You will integrate and test software segments, automate tests, verify requirements, and deliver products to operations. You will be supporting a program through full life‑cycle milestones in Agile sprints to achieve the mission. You will have strong verbal and written communication skills, operate independently with little oversight, and handle diverse assignments efficiently.

Job Responsibilities
  • Drive development and execution of features for the satellite ground systems domain with familiarity in reading CAMEO/MBSE models.
  • Participate in working groups, research customer needs and interfaces, and translate them into digital artifacts to enable software implementation.
  • Support and/or lead development of verification planning, test requirements, and other key products.
  • Work scope covers a range of Systems Engineering disciplines and products, including requirements & verification, interfaces, architecture, and design, integration, test and sell‑off.
  • Engage in sprint planning, stand‑ups, retrospectives, and reviews while maintaining alignment with product vision and mission goals.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in Space‑Vehicle Command and Control System areas and collaborate with other teams supporting subsystems.
  • Conduct demos and briefings for customers and senior leadership.
  • Ensure seamless integration of capabilities, epics, and features with ground satellite software systems solutions.
  • Utilize Atlassian tool suite, including JIRA dashboards and Confluence knowledge bases.
  • Support and/or lead preparation and execution of milestones and Agile product increments.
  • Engage with multiple working groups and control boards.
  • Additional specific responsibilities can be tailored based on the skillset and experience of the selected candidate.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline with 2+ years of engineering experience OR Master’s degree in STEM discipline.
  • Candidate must have an active SCI at time of application and prior to start date.
  • Experience with developing and evaluating behavioral and structural architecture diagrams using MBSE methodology and tooling or equivalent.
  • Experience using No Magic Cameo or equivalent.
  • Experience with space‑vehicle, command‑and‑control, mission management, mission data processing, or software subsystems.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills through written requirements, test, and evaluation criteria.
  • Experience with Systems Engineering processes and artifact development in support of SW development, including use cases, interface control documents, class diagrams, sequence diagrams, database design, schema development, and SW protocols such as REST, HTTP, & RESP or equivalent.
  • Experience working on Agile programs and methodology.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with command‑and‑control, network management, flight dynamics, and/or orbit determination for space‑vehicle related software systems.
  • Experience working with Space Vehicle Subsystems including thermal, power, attitude control system, propulsion, and/or communications.
  • Familiarity with cloud‑based architectures such as Kubernetes, containers, and orchestrators.
  • Experience working mission focused threads.
  • Experience with the software development lifecycle.
