Overview

IT@JH Research IT Solutions is seeking a Systems Engineer who is responsible for supporting researchers across Johns Hopkins University. This role involves managing Azure subscriptions and AWS accounts, providing assistance with High Performance Computing (HPC) (Linux), secure storage devices and virtual desktop environments (Windows). The position deploys various Cloud based services and collaborates with other IT@JH teams and customers to gather requirements that align with customer needs. All solutions should be secure and compliant with NIST SP 800-171 standards, when applicable, contributing to the integrity and security of research initiatives within the institution. Work assignments are ticket-based and project-based. Weekly check-ins with the technical team/architect will review progress and challenges; once onboarded, technical tasks will be completed independently.

Job Scope/Complexity: Develop solutions based on extensive technical knowledge and experience; responsible for the full life cycle of medium to large sized complex projects. Projects typically involve applications/systems with 501-3000 concurrent users requiring uptime commensurate with Clinical, Business critical, Education critical or Enterprise systems. Impacts of outages may cause major disruption such as downtime procedures or cascades to multiple systems. Work involves building and maintaining client relationships and may include mentoring lower-level positions. Project scope can span an entire department, division, or enterprise-wide level.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design complex business, clinical, education, or infrastructure solutions by meeting with customers to observe and understand current processes and issues; provide written documentation and diagrams to share with the client and IT colleagues.
  • Design complex solutions that conform to institutional policies, standards, and guidelines, and to vendor and industry best practices to deliver a quality product.
  • Select infrastructure applications that reside between end user applications and hardware operating systems by working with vendors, customers, and other sources to provide configurable tools to customers.
  • Develop new methods to improve service processes, performance, and functionality by examining existing systems management tools and processes.
  • Research, recommend, and implement new technologies based on value to the institution.
  • Collaborate with vendors to improve product quality and fit for the institution; establish product mastery and demonstrate initiative for improvements.

Install & Configure

  • Install and configure complex server hardware and operating systems by following technical documentation to provide a working product.
  • Evaluate, implement, and manage complex software and hardware solutions using best practices to ensure system integrity.
  • Install and configure infrastructure applications following product installation directions and industry best practices to deliver solutions to customers.
  • Implement a schedule of system backups and archive operations to ensure data/media recoverability.

Maintain & Troubleshoot

  • Provide complex server level administration (manage hardware/software, maintenance, upgrades, backups, recoveries, and user assistance) by following documented procedures to ensure a stable environment.
  • Monitor and tune the system to achieve optimum performance.
  • Develop complex scripts and solutions to automate systems management.
  • Perform complex system software upgrades including planning, testing, and coordination to maintain a stable environment.
  • Design and/or integrate security authorization and access control; audit and maintain user access and authorization to provide system security.
  • Generate and maintain complex periodic and ongoing system reports to assess performance, integrity, and capacity for a stable user environment.
  • Follow IT security best practices to deliver secure solutions to customers.
  • Utilize system management and monitoring tools and incident tracking systems to detect incidents, take corrective actions, and determine root cause.
  • Monitor changes and resolve incidents by reviewing processing and outcomes and ensuring successful deployment.

Project Collaboration & Lifecycle Participation

  • Implement changes following change management policies and communicate nature, significance, and risk factors to all parties.
  • Develop RFPs from requirements and follow institutional and purchasing guidelines to present documented requirements to vendors.
  • Evaluate vendor proposals and select the most appropriate vendor.
  • Assist vendors, consultants, and internal teams in developing applications to deliver quality products.
  • Participate in project team meetings and provide input; author and maintain audience-appropriate documentation.
  • Develop and execute test scenarios to ensure changes work as expected and errors are handled appropriately.
  • May participate in Institutional and Departmental committees and initiatives.

On-Call Requirement

  • Participation in on-call rotation is required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Four years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience; additional related experience may substitute for required education per the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive working experience with Cloud technologies, specifically Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Proficiency in both Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Ability to gather project requirements and design secure solutions that align with IT@JH standards.
  • Experience working in multi-layered, complex organizations and collaborating across diverse teams.
  • Willingness to attend infrequent team meetings in Baltimore, MD, as needed to facilitate collaboration.

Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
