Job summary

Medtronic CST is seeking a Systems Engineer II to design and integrate computer-assisted and robotic-assisted surgery solutions. You will lead cross-functional teams, define requirements, and work across software and hardware domains to improve patient outcomes.

You will collaborate with physicians and engineers, contribute to architecture decisions, and support evaluations in clinical environments. A relevant engineering degree and experience in medical devices are preferred.

As a Systems Engineer II within the CST Platforms and Solutions organization you will utilize your technical expertise in solving complex problems and in designing solutions using computer-assisted and robotic-assisted surgery technology to improve patient outcomes and surgical efficiency.

  • You will work independently with general supervision on moderately complex systems tasks
  • You will drive technical decision-making within the team to be consistent with big picture design goals and system functionality
  • You will work within and influence a cross-functional team to design, develop, test, and document innovative system solutions utilizing software and hardware components.
  • You will lead the definition and development of user needs, business needs, use cases, requirements, and system architecture.
  • You will lead assist in the engineering analysis to optimize and select concepts to ensure the final solution fulfills needs, requirements, use cases, environments, and the overall system vision.
  • You will lead assist in the planning and execution of user evaluations in lab-based surgical environments or other formative evaluation events to gain insightful feedback on design concepts.
  • You will lead support the team in identifying and mitigating technical risks, product hazards, and failure modes.
  • You will troubleshoot system component integration and support surgical procedure introduction of the design.
  • You will provide technical input to internal and cross-business development teams, serving as a subject matter expert in computer-assisted surgery, robotic-assisted surgery, and clinical procedural workflows.
Must Haves
  • Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with 0 years relevant experience
Nice to Haves
  • Experience in the medical device industry and/or surgical techniques.
  • Experience in Systems Engineering as related to stakeholder needs definition, creation of use case workflows, requirements definition and decomposition, functional architecture, system design, and safety risk management.
  • Experience planning and conducting user evaluations of product concepts, analyzing data, documenting evaluation methods and results, and presenting design recommendations to product teams.
  • Experience with software design, algorithm design, GUI design, and iterative software development practices.
  • Familiarity and experience working with scripting languages, Polarion, Miro, or Figma.
  • Experience with mechanical and/or electrical design, mechanical/electrical drawings, tolerance analysis, and computer-aided design (CAD).
  • Familiarity with modern AI-enabled tools for drafting, analysis, knowledge synthesis, and software or system development support.
  • Ability to apply AI tools effectively while exercising sound engineering judgment, technical accuracy, and appropriate review of outputs.
  • Ability to quickly prototype new concepts and ideas.
  • Ability to assess new technologies via comprehensive reviews of the state-of-the-art
  • Project management skills, leading a project team as well as planning and estimation of tasks, milestones, resources, and budgets
Travel Requirements

Travel is expected less than 20% to work with colleagues across geographies, observe surgical cases, interact with surgeons on design prototypes, attend technical and clinical conferences, collaborate with external design partners, and attend professional development events.

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$88,800.00 - $133,200.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
