  • Cross‑functional product leadership: Partner with R&D, quality, regulatory, product management, systems engineering, and program teams to align software development priorities with product development initiatives and business objectives.
  • Talent acquisition and onboarding: Recruit, hire, and onboard software engineering talent with strong technical depth, sound engineering judgment, and practical experience applying AI‑assisted development tools in professional software environments.
  • Team development: Coach and develop reporting staff through regular feedback, career planning, technical mentorship, and opportunities to build modern software engineering capabilities, including responsible use of AI‑enabled tools.
  • Extended workforce leadership: Recruit, engage, and direct third‑party and contractor resources as needed, ensuring external contributors follow software development, quality, cybersecurity, and documentation expectations.
  • Engineering execution and strategy: Lead and mentor software engineers to deliver strong organizational performance, grow individual capability, and advance the team’s technical strategy across architecture, development practices, automation, and delivery excellence.
  • Process maturity and quality: Improve software development processes and quality metrics in partnership with R&D leadership to meet customer expectations for reliability, safety, cybersecurity, maintainability, and system performance.
  • Customer and field issue resolution: Analyze, diagnose, and resolve customer problem reports in close collaboration with product support, quality, systems, and sustaining engineering teams.
  • AI‑assisted engineering practices: Establish practical guidance for using AI‑enabled development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, OpenAI‑based solutions, and similar model‑driven capabilities to support code generation, refactoring, test creation, documentation, troubleshooting, and engineering productivity.
  • Local LLM enablement: Evaluate and apply local or privately hosted large language models where appropriate to support secure engineering workflows, protect sensitive intellectual property, reduce external data exposure, and enable experimentation within approved cybersecurity and compliance boundaries.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
  • May develop, evaluate, implement and maintain technical quality assurance and control systems.
  • May establish software reliability mechanisms and standards for company products.
  • Oversees the investigation and evaluation of existing technologies.
  • Guides the conceptualization of new methodologies, materials, machines, processes and/or products.
  • Leads the development of new concepts from initial design to market release.
  • Manages feasibility studies of the design to determine if capable of functioning as intended.
  • Monitors and supports the delivery of documentation throughout all phases of research and development.
  • Organizes the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.
  • Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.
  • A key responsibility of roles in this career stream is managing people. which includes: accountability for mentoring, developing and coaching staff on meeting/exceeding performance expectations and defined objectives, providing leadership to staff ensuring the prioritization of strategic and department level initiatives to include defining performance goals and targets, conducting performance reviews, and staff 1:1s to guide performance management and employee development efforts and manage toward departmental goals.
Must Have
  • Requires a bachelors degree with 5 years of relevant experience OR advanced degree with 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience leading and managing the execution of processes, projects and tactics within Software Engineering
Nice to Have
  • Strong organization acumen with the ability to communicate effectively to non‑technical audiences
  • Deep expertise in software test methodologies, quality standards/metrics (e.g. IEC 62304)
  • Experience with APIs, SDKs, and AI tools that improve the speed, quality, and precision of software development.
  • Experience developing software in a regulated environment
  • Proven track record as a successful software engineer
  • Experience leading infrastructure, DevOps, and site reliability engineering

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R.

Medtronic offers a competitive Salary and flexible Benefits Package

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$150,400.00 - $225,600.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information applies solely to candidates hired within the United States (local‑market compensation and benefits will apply to others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long‑term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well‑being program).
