The Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, integration, administration, security, and optimization of the organization’s information technology infrastructure. The position leads infrastructure initiatives from requirements gathering through implementation and ongoing support. Responsibilities include Windows and Linux systems, enterprise applications and collaboration services, identity services, virtualization, storage, backup and recovery, and on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments.
Reporting to the Manager of Infrastructure, the Systems Engineer collaborates with business departments, IT staff, vendors, and consultants to deliver solutions that meet operational requirements. The position provides technical leadership, mentors colleagues, and contributes to infrastructure strategy, standards, and resource planning while independently managing assigned initiatives within established authority.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead assigned infrastructure projects from requirements gathering and solution design through implementation, testing, documentation, and transition to support. Establish scope, schedules, resource requirements, dependencies, and risks; track progress and **escalate** issues requiring management decisions.
- Analyze departmental business processes and requirements, evaluate technical alternatives, and recommend solutions that balance security, reliability, usability, cost, and maintainability.
- Lead the evaluation, implementation, integration, upgrade, migration, and retirement of enterprise infrastructure and services. Coordinate testing, change management, operational readiness, and user adoption with business owners and technical partners.
- Design and maintain enterprise storage, file services, and collaboration solutions that meet business requirements for availability, access, information organization, retention, scalability, and integration with applications.
- Design, implement, administer, and support Windows and Linux systems, virtualization platforms, directory and identity services, enterprise applications, and cloud services. Manage configuration, access, updates, system services, and integration across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments.
- Strengthen availability and recoverability through monitoring, capacity planning, lifecycle management, backup validation, and documented recovery testing.
- Incorporate security into designs and changes, including least-privilege access, secure configuration, patching, and remediation of identified vulnerabilities. Coordinate with colleagues responsible for networking and security.
- Develop and maintain scripts and automation for provisioning, configuration, administration, monitoring, and reporting using appropriate tools, such as PowerShell, Bash, or Python. Maintain technical documentation, implementation procedures, and support runbooks.
- Resolve complex infrastructure incidents, identify root causes, and implement lasting corrective actions. Participate in the on-call rotation and planned after-hours maintenance.
- Coordinate vendors and consultants, evaluate technical proposals, and contribute to technology road maps, purchasing recommendations, and project cost estimates. Share knowledge and provide technical guidance to colleagues.
- Maintain compliance with organizational policies, change management procedures, applicable requirements, and established technical standards. Perform related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and professional experience.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record for required travel between work locations.
- At least five years of progressively responsible experience in systems administration, infrastructure engineering, or a closely related role, including demonstrated ownership of infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated experience leading infrastructure initiatives through requirements analysis, solution design, implementation, testing, documentation, and operational support.
- Hands‑on experience administering and troubleshooting both Windows and Linux server environments, including operating system configuration, patching, permissions, services, logging, and performance.
- Experience administering enterprise directory and identity services, authentication, access controls, and centralized policy management.
- Practical experience with enterprise virtualization, storage, backup, and recovery operations, including troubleshooting and validation of system recoverability.
- Experience administering enterprise cloud infrastructure or cloud-based services and integrating them with on‑premises systems. Ability to apply security, identity, networking, availability, and cost‑management principles across cloud and hybrid environments.
- Working knowledge of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, VPNs, and firewalls, sufficient to troubleshoot infrastructure dependencies and collaborate on solution design.
- Ability to develop, maintain, and troubleshoot scripts using tools such as PowerShell, Bash, or Python to automate systems administration tasks.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work, exercise sound technical judgment, identify and communicate risks, and independently manage assigned projects within established authority.
- Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to work with nontechnical stakeholders, document solutions, and explain recommendations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience designing or modernizing enterprise infrastructure, collaboration platforms, or shared services, including governance, permissions, integration, and operational support.
- Experience evaluating cloud platforms, migrating workloads or data, and managing hybrid or multicloud environments across infrastructure, platform, or software services.
- Experience with enterprise identity integration, single sign‑on, endpoint management, configuration management, or infrastructure as code.
- Disaster recovery planning and testing, security improvement projects, or work in a regulated or critical infrastructure organization.
- Vendor coordination, technical mentoring, project planning, or contributions to infrastructure roadmaps and budgets.
- Relevant professional certifications in systems engineering, Windows or Linux administration, cloud platforms, virtualization, networking, or information security.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Sedentary – Exerting up to 10lbs of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
- Occasional Heavy lifting- Exerting 50 to 100lbs of force occasionally and/or more than 50lbs. of force frequently and/or more than 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are more than those for Heavy work.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods.
- Ability to install and maintain equipment in server rooms, data closets, and office environments.
- Ability to distinguish colors, read technical diagrams, and work with small electronic components.
- Ability to travel between facilities and work locations as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is performed primarily in an office, server room, and technical support environment.
- Regular exposure to computer equipment, network infrastructure, and telecommunications systems.
- May require occasional evening, weekend, and emergency response work to support system maintenance or outages.
- Participation in an on-call rotation may be required.
- Occasional travel to remote facilities, vendor sites, training events, and conferences may be necessary.
