The Hybrid Server Administrator is responsible for the reliable, secure, and cost-effective operation of Rock County's on-premises and hybrid server infrastructure and enterprise print environment. This position administers virtual and physical servers, virtualization platforms, storage and supporting services; monitors availability, capacity, performance, patching, and lifecycle status; and provides primary technical ownership for centralized print services, print servers, queues, drivers, and related vendor coordination. Working closely with the Cloud Operations Administrator, this position evaluates workload placement and resource utilization across on-premises infrastructure and the Microsoft Azure tenant. This position supports workload modernization and migrations, helps ensure that server resources are appropriately sized and secured, supports interoperability between environments, and contributes to disaster recovery, governance, documentation, and continuous improvement for Enterprise Systems Management (ESM).
15% System Security and Compliance
- Implement, maintain, and report on security and compliance baselines for on-premises and hybrid server systems, virtualization platforms, storage, and print infrastructure.
- Coordinate with IT Security and the Cloud Operations Administrator to apply access controls, hardening standards, vulnerability remediation, patching, certificate management, and least-privilege practices.
- Configure and monitor security controls for Windows Server, Active Directory dependencies, service accounts, administrative access, and related management tools.
- Investigate and remediate server and print-related security findings; provide timely status and risk reporting to the Enterprise Systems Supervisor.
50% Hybrid Server and Virtualization Operations
- Configure, maintain, monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize Rock County's physical and virtual Windows server environment, including VMware virtualization, hyperconverged infrastructure, storage, and associated management systems.
- Provision, upgrade, decommission, and document servers in accordance with approved standards, change management, lifecycle plans, and vendor support requirements.
- Monitor compute, memory, storage, network, licensing, and availability metrics; identify capacity or performance constraints and recommend corrective action before service is affected.
- Administer server-related infrastructure services, file services, certificates, and other Active Directory-integrated dependencies.
- Maintain minimum downtime by coordinating hardware maintenance, warranty service, firmware updates, vendor support, and lifecycle replacement.
- Develop and maintain PowerShell scripts and other automation that improve consistency, reporting, provisioning, maintenance, and operational efficiency.
- Complete related Ivanti service requests, incidents, changes, jobs, and tasks in a timely manner consistent with policies and service-level expectations.
10% Enterprise Print Services
- Serve as primary technical administrator for enterprise print services, including print servers, queues, deployment policies, secure-print solutions, and printer-related integrations.
- Standardize printer configurations and driver packages; test and deploy changes while minimizing disruption to operations.
- Monitor print service availability and capacity, troubleshoot escalated printing issues, and coordinate vendor support as necessary.
- Coordinate with Service Team for printer additions, moves, replacements, and retirements.
10% Hybrid Optimization and Workload Migration
- Partner with the Cloud Operations Administrator to evaluate workload optimization based on cost, performance, security, and business requirements.
- Collect and analyze utilization, licensing, and lifecycle data needed for workload sizing, migration planning, and resource optimization.
- Work with stakeholders and the Cloud Operations Administrator to plan, execute, and mitigate issues regarding server migrations to or from cloud tenants.
- Document recommendations and provide resource, risk, schedule, and cost information to the Enterprise Systems Supervisor and project stakeholders.
10% Backup, Recovery, and Business Continuity
- Assist with routine backup and recovery data integrity testing.
- Assist in maintaining disaster recovery and business continuity plans, inventories, dependencies, runbooks, and recovery priorities for on-premises and hybrid services.
- Participate in recovery exercises and coordinate with the Cloud Operations Administrator to align on-premises recovery capabilities with Azure-based continuity and disaster recovery strategies when necessary.
5% Technical Proficiency, Task Management, and Administration
- Maintain technical proficiency for assigned systems through continuous learning, training, documentation review, and annual development goals.
- Plan and prioritize incidents, service requests, maintenance, projects, and lifecycle work; communicate status, risks, decisions, and dependencies with minimal supervision.
- Work independently with ESM team members, IT Security, Network Services, application teams, departments, vendors, and project stakeholders.
- Analyze ESM processes and recommend or implement improvements that increase standardization, automation, availability, security, and service quality.
- Create and maintain current system diagrams, inventories, standards, procedures, support records, and knowledge articles.
- Participate in the after-hours on-call rotation and perform planned maintenance during evenings or weekends when needed to minimize operational disruption.
- Assist the ESM Supervisor with project planning, lifecycle forecasting, budgeting information, licensing analysis, and technical recommendations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Working knowledge of hybrid infrastructure concepts and the administration, troubleshooting, performance management, and lifecycle support of physical and virtual servers.
- Demonstrated proficiency with VMware, vSphere or comparable enterprise virtualization technologies, Windows Server 2016 or later, and Active Directory-integrated services.
- Working knowledge of enterprise storage, hyperconverged infrastructure, server hardware, high availability, patch management, monitoring, and capacity planning.
- Working knowledge of Veeam Backup & Replication or comparable enterprise backup and recovery technologies.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Azure infrastructure services as they relate to hybrid server administration, workload placement, migration, monitoring, backup, and disaster recovery.
- Working knowledge of Active Directory configuration and troubleshooting.
- Working knowledge of Active Directory Group Policy configuration and troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated ability to administer enterprise print servers, queues, drivers, deployment methods, permissions, and printer troubleshooting in a managed Windows environment.
- Ability to evaluate workload dependencies and utilization data and make practical recommendations regarding utilization, modernization, lifecycle, and on-premises versus cloud placement.
- Working knowledge of PowerShell scripting and automation; familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and hybrid management tools is desirable.
- Relevant Microsoft Azure, Windows Server, Linux OS, VMware, Veeam, or equivalent industry certification is preferred.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, documentation, customer-service, and vendor-management skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, communicate technical issues to technical and nontechnical audiences, and work independently or collaboratively with minimal supervision.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with Rock County, CJIS, security, change-management, and records requirements.
- Minimum Associates degree in an Information Technology related field (experience can be a consideration)
- Three or more years of progressively responsible IT experience supporting enterprise servers, virtualization, storage, backup, or related infrastructure preferred.
- Certification related to cloud platform management - MS Azure Administrator Associate minimum preferred.
- Must have a valid driver's license
- Work may occasionally include weekends, evenings or split shifts
- Ability to pass FBI security check
- Must be able to participate in after-hours on-call rotation
