The successful candidate will combine strong Appian platform administration experience with Java-based application support skills to sustain a reliable, secure, scalable, and high-performing environment.

This role is responsible for the operational health of on-premises Appian environments across development, test, staging, and production tiers. The System Administrator will work closely with application developers, database administrators, infrastructure and cybersecurity teams, release managers, and customer stakeholders to support platform availability, configuration management, incident resolution, deployment activities, and continuous service improvement.

The ideal candidate brings practical experience supporting enterprise Java applications in Linux-based environments; understands Appian architecture, including application servers, data sources, integrations, and deployment processes; and applies disciplined operational practices within a controlled federal environment.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Administer, configure, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot on-premises platform environments, including development, test, staging, and production instances.
  • Manage platform configuration, application deployment, system upgrades, patches, hotfixes, and environment refreshes in accordance with approved change-management procedures.
  • Configure and maintain users, groups, roles, security settings, authentication integrations, and access controls consistent with least-privilege principles.
  • Monitor system performance, health, capacity, and availability; identify trends, diagnose bottlenecks, and implement corrective or preventive actions.
  • Support configuration and administration of components, including process models, records, data stores, integrations, document repositories, and interface dependencies.
  • Coordinate with vendor support, infrastructure teams, and application stakeholders to investigate and resolve complex platform defects, incidents, and operational issues.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute standard operating procedures, system administration guides, runbooks, and recovery procedures.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical discipline; additional relevant experience may be substituted for a degree.
  • Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in systems administration, application administration, DevOps, platform operations, or enterprise application support.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting on-premises Appian environments, including installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Practical experience supporting Java-based enterprise applications, including analysis of application logs, error messages, Java stack traces, configuration files, and deployment artifacts.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix systems administration, command-line troubleshooting, file permissions, process management, shell scripting, and service monitoring.
  • Experience with application servers and web technologies, such as Apache Tomcat, JBoss/WildFly, Apache HTTP Server, NGINX, or comparable technologies.
  • Experience supporting relational databases and database connectivity, preferably Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with enterprise authentication and authorization methods, including Active Directory, LDAP, SSO, SAML, OAuth, or multifactor authentication integrations.
  • Knowledge of IT service management, incident response, change management, release management, and configuration management practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose complex technical issues and communicate recommended solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical documentation, runbooks, incident reports, and operational procedures.
  • Ability to satisfy applicable government background investigation, suitability, and security requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting Appian in a federal, public-sector, or similarly regulated enterprise environment.
  • Experience with Appian deployment tools, application-package migration, environment promotion procedures, and release automation.
  • Experience supporting DevSecOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, source-code repositories, and automated deployment tools, such as Git, Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, Ansible, or comparable solutions.
  • Working knowledge of containerization and orchestration technologies, such as Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code, configuration management, or scripting technologies, including Ansible, Terraform, Bash, Python, or PowerShell.
