Job summary

Job description

Job Overview

AMA is a leading full‑service aerospace engineering and analytics company supporting NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC). The role is a full‑time, mid‑to‑senior level System Safety Engineer (SSE) who will lead and facilitate system safety and hazard management in support of NASA’s airworthiness and safety review process at AFRC, Edwards, California.

Responsibilities
  • Provide system safety expertise to project teams and facilitate the development, documentation, and implementation of system safety plans for flight and ground operations.
  • Maintain continuous risk management (CRM), capture lessons‑learned, and analyze component‑level reliability and maintainability.
  • Manage and lead projects through System Safety Working Group (SSWG) discussions, capturing project risks, hazards classification, and mitigation formulation.
  • Develop and maintain a project hazard database and support mandatory hazard reporting.
  • Support independent assessment review groups chartered to examine the project.
  • Participate in project meetings, configuration control boards, design reviews, flight readiness reviews, and similar forums.
  • Prepare and present system‑safety hazard status to NASA center management and agency safety review boards as required.
  • Complete required NASA and DoD training to maintain system safety competency.
Desired Attributes & Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of engineering, technology, and systems‑engineering concepts applied to aerospace systems.
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers in system safety processes and principles.
  • Demonstrated originality, sound judgment, and analytical thinking in complex problem resolution.
  • Experience in development, prototyping, or flight testing of unique aerospace systems.
  • Proficiency with safety analysis techniques such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
  • Leadership skills to guide teams in identifying, categorizing, mitigating, and managing system safety risks.
  • Experience in at least one of the following technology areas: aircraft systems, avionics hardware, software design/development/management, real‑time systems, unmanned aircraft systems, or system test/validation.
General Work Requirements
  • Work a 9/80 schedule with core hours 8:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.; occasional travel may be required.
  • Compliance with AMA’s Drug‑Free Workplace Policy.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident.
Education & Experience Requirements
  • Professional degree in Engineering (Aeronautical, Aerospace, Electronics, Electrical, Chemical, Civil, or Mechanical), Science (Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics), or Technology (Electronics Technology, Computer Science, Human Factors, Safety, Industrial Engineering).
  • Accredited institution or equivalent military technical training.
  • Minimum of 5 years related work experience with a BS or MS degree; alternatively, 20 years of experience for a non‑degreed Engineering Technician.
  • Leadership experience is a plus.
Salary & Benefits
  • Salary range: $127,000 – $142,000+.
