Job summary

Perrone Robotics, Inc. is seeking a hands-on Systems Engineer to own hardware, sensor, connectivity, and safety-critical systems for TONY AV Kit deployments nationwide from our Charlottesville, VA office.

You will support hardware integration, software builds, data pipelines, and scalable installation procedures, while validating safety-critical systems and maintaining documentation across deployed vehicles.

Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with vehicle electrical systems or mobile robotics.
  • Experience installing, calibrating, configuring LiDAR or RADAR sensors.
  • Experience with motor controllers or actuator systems.
  • Strong documentation skills; safety-first troubleshooting.
  • Basic scripting or command-line experience (shell or Python).

Responsibilities

  • Support LiDAR and RADAR sensor installation, calibration, diagnostics, and vendor escalation.
  • Own fail-safe testing and produce formal QA reports for safety-critical systems.
  • Manage cellular hardware, networking, SIM provisioning, carrier troubleshooting, and RTK/GPS subscriptions.
  • Design and build test fixtures for LiDAR, RADAR, hardware, wiring, and software diagnostics.
  • Create and maintain installation SOPs, BOMs, wiring diagrams, and assembly diagrams.
  • Support new hardware rollouts, including motor and steering systems, remote start/stop, and module installation.
  • Execute recurring engineering test cycles and track defects through closure.
  • Manage vehicle data collection and cloud upload workflows.
  • Deploy and update vehicle software, firmware, configurations, and profiles.

Job description

Perrone Robotics is looking for a hands-on Systems Engineer, based out of our Charlottesville, Virginia office, to own the hardware, sensor, connectivity, and safety-critical systems behind our TONY AV Kit deployments across transit and government partners nationwide.

This role sits at the intersection of hardware integration, software and DevOps support, and technical documentation. The Systems Engineer will support deployed vehicles, validate safety-critical systems, support software builds and data pipelines, and develop the procedures and documentation needed to scale vehicle installations reliably.

Responsibilities
  • Support LiDAR and RADAR sensor installation, configuration, firmware management, calibration, diagnostics, and vendor escalation.
  • Own fail-safe testing and produce formal pass/fail QA reports for safety-critical systems.
  • Manage cellular hardware, networking, SIM provisioning, carrier troubleshooting, and RTK/GPS subscriptions.
  • Design and build test fixtures for isolated LiDAR, RADAR, hardware, wiring, and software diagnostics.
  • Create and maintain installation SOPs, BOMs, wiring diagrams, and assembly diagrams.
  • Support new hardware rollouts, including motor and steering systems, remote start and stop systems, and module installation.
  • Execute recurring engineering test cycles and track defects through closure.
  • Manage vehicle data collection and cloud upload workflows.
  • Deploy and update vehicle software, firmware, configurations, and profiles.
Required Experience
  • Hands-on experience with vehicle electrical systems, mobile robotics, automotive systems, or heavy-vehicle hardware integration.
  • Experience installing, calibrating, configuring, or troubleshooting LiDAR and/or RADAR sensors.
  • Experience with motor controllers or actuator systems.
  • Working knowledge of Ethernet, UDP, CAN, Modbus, and USB-based configuration tools.
  • Experience with cellular or networking hardware.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Basic scripting or command-line experience, including shell or Python.
  • A methodical, safety-first approach to troubleshooting.

This is a full-time, onsite position in Charlottesville, Virginia. Occasional travel of approximately 10% is required.
