Qualifications

  • High school diploma required.
  • Associate’s Degree or higher preferred.
  • 1–3 years of natural gas or petroleum industry experience preferred.
  • 1–3 years of experience with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Prior SCADA experience with programming/troubleshooting preferred.
  • Knowledge of API RP 1165 and API RP 1168 preferred.
  • Knowledge of physics, chemistry, gas regulators, and related terminology.
  • Must comply with all federal and state regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Safely and reliably operate the natural gas system(s) through a SCADA system.
  • Adjust supplies via remote-control regulators and valves to maintain pressures and flow.
  • Remotely monitor equipment including regulators, control valves, RCVs, odorant injection, compressors, boilers and heaters.
  • Prepare and submit reports to various departments.
  • Monitor SCADA alarms and respond to unusual conditions, notifying personnel.
  • Coordinate timely responses to system emergencies and outages.
  • Maintain safe operations per the Control Room Management Plan.
  • Provide training and performance monitoring of new system controllers on SCADA and safe operation.
  • Complete annual training (Fatigue Management, Operator Qualification, SCADA Security, cross-training).
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Read and work from engineering drawings, pipeline maps, and procedures.
  • Pass random drug testing.

Summary

Spire is seeking a System Controller to work in the St. Louis, MO location. This role may include but is not limited to 24/ 7 monitoring and control of the Company’s natural gas distribution systems, storage and transmission assets to ensure safety, reliability and efficiency.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Safely and reliably operate the natural gas system(s) through a SCADA system.
  • Responsible for adjusting supplies through use of remote-control regulators and valves as needed to maintain sufficient system pressures and flow.
  • Remotely control and monitor company equipment which may include but is not limited to regulator set-points, control valves, RCVs, odorant injection, compressors, boilers and heaters in order to maintain maximum safety and efficiency of the system.
  • Prepare and submit reports to various departments and personnel within the Company.
  • Responsible for monitoring, analyzing and responding to SCADA alarms and the recognition of unusual conditions that do not generate alarms while notifying appropriate personnel.
  • Coordinate appropriate and timely response to system emergencies and other operational problems that could result in unsafe conditions and possible service outages.
  • Maintain safe operational practices as described in the Control Room Management Plan.
  • Provide on-going training and performance monitoring of new system controllers in the use of the SCADA system and the safe operation of the system(s)
  • Complete annual training relating but not limited to: Fatigue Management, Operator Qualification, Information/SCADA Security, Intra-Departmental Cross-Training.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others inside and outside of the Company.

Required Education (certifications, licenses)
  • High school diploma required
  • Formal technical training with an Associate’s Degree or higher preferred
Required knowledge, skill and abilities
  • One to three years of applicable work experience in the natural gas or petroleum industry preferred.
  • One to three years of computer experience with proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite software, especially Excel
  • Prior experience using SCADA system software with the ability to program and troubleshoot computer problems preferred.
  • Knowledge of API RP 1165, API RP 1168 preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic physics, chemistry, gas pressure regulators, gas flow measurement and related gas industry terminology
  • Must be compliant with all federal and state regulations.
Physical demands, environment and schedule
  • Work is performed in a 24/7 control room environment with frequent distractions that require concentration, multitasking, and decisive appropriate actions in the performance of duties.
  • Required year-round 12 hour rotating shift work schedule including days, nights, weekends and holidays.
