Job Description

Class Title: Teacher Assistant

Characteristics of the Class: Under the general direction of the school principal and immediate supervision of a certified teacher, assists in instructing pupils and performs related duties as required.

Essential Functions

• Supervises students during lunch and playground activities, monitors corridors, reviews student IDs, assists with classroom assignments, prepares bulletin boards, operates photocopying machines, maintains classroom order, greets visitors, and consults with teachers regarding student concerns.
• Operates audio-visual equipment, provides tutoring, helps in grading homework and exams, supervises bus loading/unloading, assists with book processing, contacts parents about absences, and may help with elementary school recess and transportation pass sales.

Minimum Qualifications

Certification Requirements: Valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education, obtained after 60 college semester hours or passing a paraprofessional exam (Work Keys or Parapro).

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Good knowledge of English grammar, spelling, basic math, and CPS rules; ability to work with children, follow instructions, operate office equipment, and communicate effectively; desirable skills include good reading, writing, and operating audio-visual and computer equipment.

Physical Requirements

Light work involving exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally and 10 pounds frequently, with walking or standing required.
