Job Description

Class Title: Special Education Classroom Assistant

Characteristics of the Class: Under the general direction of the school principal and immediate supervision of a certified Special Education teacher, assists in teaching students with disabilities and performs related duties.

Essential Functions
  1. Assist teachers in supporting students with various disabilities according to each student’s IEP.
  2. Lift and position non-ambulatory students as instructed.
  3. Provide one-on-one tutoring and personal hygiene services.
  4. Assist students with orthopedic impairments by adjusting tools and equipment.
  5. Help instruct students in daily living skills.
  6. Accompany students to swimming pools, medical clinics, and on class field trips.
  7. Assist in feeding students and taking notes for students unable to do so.
  8. Correct homework and maintain behavioral records.
  9. Attend workshops and training sessions.
Marginal Functions
  • May utilize physical restraint techniques.
  • May administer CPR if trained.
  • Operate audio-visual and photocopying equipment.
Minimum Qualifications

Certification Requirements: Valid TASN paraprofessional license from ISBE or equivalent, obtained after 60 college credit hours or passing a paraprofessional exam.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Knowledge of disabilities, English, and math; ability to work with students with disabilities; follow instructions; complete reports; CPR training is desirable.

Physical Requirements: Medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, with the ability to reach, handle, and communicate effectively.
