English as Second Language Teacher (ESL)

QUALIFICATIONS

Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate – English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL)

Purpose Statement

The job of an ELL educator is as diverse as the students they serve. Unlike classroom teachers, these teachers help students from different grade levels, sometimes spanning grades from kindergarten through 12th grade. Because students come from many backgrounds, ELL teachers must possess keen observation skills and the ability to tailor their instruction to meet each student's individual needs. Lessons focus on vocabulary development, fluency, articulation and comprehension. Students often bring books, problems, and reports from their other classes to the ESL teacher so they learn to develop language skills in context.

Essential Functions

  • Acts as a liaison between the student, family, school and community
  • Responsible for administering standardized tests and tracking their students' progress against state standards
  • Helps the student and family understand U.S. culture and social norms
  • Works with interpreters to communicate information to the family about student progress, school programs or district events
  • Instruction provided in students' home schools
  • Individualized instruction
  • Instructional models: one-on-one, small group, or assistance within the regular classroom
  • Social language instruction - emphasis on the concurrent development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing through authentic student-centered materials
  • Academic language instruction - emphasis on student accomplishment of District CCOs (Core Curriculum Objectives)
  • Instruction in basic usage of District computer technology
  • Support of students' home cultures through comparison of cultures within the instructional framework, District-wide celebrations, school-based multicultural festivals, and educational outreach to individual classrooms
  • Monitoring of LM (Language Minority) students' progress at regular intervals

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to routinely upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform advanced math; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; age-appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining constructive relationships; adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality; exhibiting tact and patience; and working flexible hours.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; directing other persons within a small work unit; operating within a defined budget. utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization’s services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.
