KIPP, the Knowledge Is Power Program, is a national network of free, open enrollment, college preparatory public schools dedicated to preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and life. The Opportunity

The Dean of Student Life is a key member of the school leadership team responsible for fostering a positive, proactive, and responsive school culture. This role oversees the learning environment and community, ensuring an environment where each student can succeed.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Establishing, maintaining, and celebrating a positive school culture and climate
  • Owning the social-emotional curriculum and philosophies, reinforcing positive self-identity and character strengths
  • Partnering with families to build an authentic school-wide community and organizing related events
  • Leading recognition assemblies, family academies, community meetings, and other culture-building activities
  • Facilitating staff training on student-teacher relationships, classroom management, and school culture
  • Coordinating social-emotional learning programs and weekly celebrations
  • Working with student leadership groups to build culture and incentives
  • Setting and tracking environment goals, designing celebrations and recognition systems

Building a Restorative Culture

  • Leading efforts to develop a restorative school culture focused on student achievement
  • Supporting the creation and implementation of individual behavior plans
  • Working directly with students on social skills and social-emotional development, including trauma-informed approaches
  • Facilitating re-entry meetings and professional development on restorative practices
  • Advocating for students, engaging families and teachers to support success
  • Maintaining accurate records of incidents, conferences, and interventions
  • Supporting tier 2 and tier 3 interventions to promote a restorative environment

Supporting Families and Staff

  • Assisting families in accessing community resources
  • Collaborating with the culture team and analyzing data to support students
  • Engaging families proactively and regularly
  • Supporting teachers in cultivating a culture of achievement and data-driven practices
  • Coaching teachers and modeling effective classroom and cultural strategies

Qualifications

All candidates must have:

  • A four-year Bachelor's degree
  • At least three years of successful full-time teaching experience in low-income communities
  • One year of school leadership or teacher-leadership experience
  • Experience analyzing student data for instructional decisions
  • Strong leadership and results in a school setting
  • An Ohio Teaching License or willingness to pursue certification
  • A belief in achieving excellent outcomes for all students
  • Perseverance, problem-solving skills, and a collaborative mindset
  • Willingness to go above and beyond for students
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Flexibility, work ethic, and entrepreneurial spirit
