Job summary

Savage is hiring a Railroad Switchman to join our operations team and support yard switching activities. You will spot cars on the correct track, move empties, and build outbound trains in coordination with site partners.

This role requires a high school diploma, valid driver’s license, the ability to lift 50 lbs, and readiness to complete OSHA, HazMat, and FRA training. Training to operate locomotives is provided, with safety at the forefront.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Able to travel to other sites to assist in switching and training requirements.
• Willingness to wear required PPE and work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends.
• Able to read, write and understand English.

Responsibilities

• Assist with spotting cars on the correct track; move empty cars and build the outbound train.
• Classification of inbound train.
• Interaction with class one railroad.
• Daily spot and pull with other site partners.
• Visually inspect rail cars and perform air brakes inspections.
• Cross train and assist in other facility functions.
• Operate a locomotive — training and certification provided.

What you will be doing as a Railroad Switchman

Requirements of a successful Rail Switchman

• A high school diploma, or equivalent
• Valid driver's license
• Ability to perform basic maintenance
• Ability to attend and pass all training associated with job related coursework. This includes but is not limited to: OSHA, HazMat and FRA related courses.
• Ability to travel to other sites to assist in switching and training requirements
• Willingness to wear required PPEAbility to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends
• Work experience in an industrial environment
• Ability to read, write and understand English
• Clear drug / alcohol test / criminal background check

Here are some of the physical requirements of this role

• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Comfortable with heights
• Walk 10+ miles per day on uneven terrain, etc.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
• Ability to work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods of time #IND1
