Switchboard Operator - St. Mary's Hospital

Job Summary:

The Switchboard Operator serves as a representative for a hospital-based call center, relaying incoming, outgoing, and inter-office calls efficiently and courteously. The role includes operating paging services via the Amcom messaging system, monitoring alarm panels, and managing over 100 client accounts, including physicians and hospital departments. The operator also handles emergency notifications and participates in meetings and training as required.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Answer and route calls accurately, respond to inquiries courteously, and take messages.
  • Provide emergency assistance, announce emergencies, and respond promptly to codes.
  • Maintain and update on-call schedules using the Amcom system.
  • Stay informed on hospital services and terminology, and inform management of updates.
  • Promote teamwork, maintain confidentiality, and support hospital policies.
  • Report equipment issues and assist with training new staff.
Education:
  • High School Diploma/GED preferred.
Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to read, write, type 25 WPM, and communicate effectively.
  • Customer service experience, preferably in a medical call center.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, calm demeanor in crises, and ability to multitask.
  • Availability to work all shifts, including on-call rotations, with reliable transportation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other software applications.
