JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Swimming Upper School Assistant Coach
Position Type: PT

Reports To: Athletic Director and Head Coach

Job Summary

The Swimming Upper School Assistant Coach is responsible for leading and developing the high-level program in alignment with TMI's core values and mission. This role encompasses skill development, supervision, transportation, communication, and fostering positive relationships with athletes and their families. The Swimming Upper School Assistant Coach is expected to cultivate a culture of excellence, integrity, and sportsmanship, ensuring that student-athletes embody the values of TMI Episcopal.

Specific Expectations

Specific Expectations for stipend, non-exempt Coaches, Administrators and Staff within the TMI Athletic Department. In addition to the duties and essential job responsibilities listed below in the job description, the following are required or encouraged.

  • Seasonal Sport Family meeting (required)
  • TMI Athletic Department staff meetings and events (required)
  • Professional Development highly encouraged by the Athletic Director (encouraged)
  • Graduation and Convocation (welcome)
  • Daily Middle School and/or Upper School Chapel (welcome)
  • TMI Community events (homecoming, senior days, college signings, athletic award ceremony, etc) (encouraged)
  • Serve as a role model, exemplifying leadership, moral character, commitment, and sportsmanship.
  • Serve as a leader that embodies TMI Epsicopal’s proven process of Cherish, Know, Challenge and the Episcopal Identity.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive sport program plan, including offseason and preseason training, in collaboration with the Director of Sports Performance.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with the Head Athletic Trainer regarding injury rehabilitation.
  • Manage the program’s resources responsibly.
  • Recruit and develop mission-appropriate student-athletes who align with TMI’s values of wisdom, integrity, service, excellence, and reverence (WISER).
  • Foster a team culture that prioritizes character development, academic responsibility, and athletic excellence.
  • Build, and mentor, a cohesive coaching staff.
Academic Alignment & Student Support
  • Collaborate with academic faculty, administration, and Athletic Directors to ensure student-athletes maintain good academic standing.
  • Monitor student-athletes' academic progress, encourage time management skills, and provide mentorship to support a balance between academics and athletics.
Player Development & Coaching
  • Instruct student-athletes on game/sport rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques, ensuring proper sportsmanship and ethical conduct.
  • Plan and oversee daily practices, focusing on both individual and team development and goals.
  • Prepare for and manage game-day logistics, including strategies, scouting reports, and game film analysis.
  • Encourage student-athletes to set personal and team goals, reinforcing accountability and commitment to continuous improvement.
Team Management & Supervision
  • Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, and team events until a responsible adult is present to pick them up.
  • Organize and oversee team selection, player evaluations, and roster decisions.
Communication & Administration
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with student-athletes, parents, faculty, and administration.
  • Communicate season schedules, weekly updates, and team expectations with families, student-athletes and Athletic Department staff.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, team performance, and player statistics.
  • Report game results and team updates to the Sports Information Coordinator directly at the conclusion of the competition.
Community Engagement & Feeder Program Involvement
  • Actively engage with middle school sport programs and youth development initiatives to create a pipeline of mission-appropriate student-athletes and families.
  • Promote TMI Athletics in the community to attract and retain student-athletes, and families, who align with the school’s values.
  • Participate in school-wide events, prospective student activities, and community service projects to reinforce the role of athletics in holistic student development.
Professional Development

Attend coaching clinics, workshops, and seminars to stay updated with the latest sport strategies, techniques, and trends.

Compliance & Safety
  • Ensure all coaching activities comply with SPC and TMI policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Adhere to TMI Athletics and TMI Upper/Middle School policies and procedures regarding student-athlete eligibility, academic standards, and behavior expectations.
  • Maintain current First Aid/CPR certification, partner with the Head Athletic Trainer/School Nurse and always prioritize player safety (mental, physical, emotional and spiritual).
Qualification/Experience/Skills
  • Prior coaching experience, preferably at the high school and/or club level.
  • Experience in an independent school setting is preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a coaching staff, with Athletic Department administration, colleagues and partners across campus.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, competitive environment with high standards and expectations.
  • Knowledge of sport-specific conditioning, skills development, and game strategies.
  • Ability to mentor and guide student-athletes in their social, spiritual, academic and athletic growth.
  • Experience in scouting, film breakdown, and player analysis is beneficial utilizing Hudl.
  • Certified First Aid/CPR required.
  • Valid Driver’s License, Class B with Passenger Endorsement preferred (for driving team transportation).
  • Ability to lift and move sport equipment.
Education
  • High School Graduate required.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Certificate(s) and/or sport specific credentials are preferred.
  • Must submit background checks and certifications as required by TMI Epsicopal and the Diocese of West Texas.
