The YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta is seeking an Assistant Swim Team Coach to support the Head Coach in delivering competitive and recreational swimming programs for youth at J.M. Tull Gwinnett Family YMCA.

The role involves assisting with practices and swim clinics across the season. Ideal candidates have a background in competitive swimming, strong teaching skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with athletes and families.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age 16.
  • Background in competitive swimming as coach or swimmer.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • 1 year coaching experience with various ages.
  • Excellent teaching skills with expertise in training and stroke development.
  • Exemplify YMCA ideals, leadership qualities and a professional image.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments.
  • YMCA Leader certification preferred (within 1st 90 Days).
  • YMCA Swim Instructor Certification and/or YMCA Lifeguard Certification.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen and motor vehicle record.
  • Within 30 days of hire, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens training.

Responsibilities

  • Teach all groups by facilitating a training and/or practice plan as developed by the Head Coach.
  • Evaluate swim team members’ goals; provide feedback for improvement and recognition.
  • Support volunteer recruitment, parent and swimmer communication, and input on rosters and meet lineups.
  • Support community involvement, fundraising efforts and events.
  • Maintain records of achievements and progress.
  • Attend meetings as scheduled.
  • Represent the YMCA at meets and community events.
  • Ensure the safety of all participants at all times.
  • Maintain knowledge of emergency procedures; report incidents promptly.
  • Promote team philosophy and a positive practice environment in line with YMCA values.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Nature And Scope

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the guidance of the Head Coach the Swim Team Assistant Coach is responsible to support the implementation of the Competitive and/or Recreational Swimming Program following the YMCA Philosophy, Aquatic Guidelines, and the YMCA Competitive Sports Guidelines. The Assistant Coach will be helping to implement instruction to swimmers throughout the swim season and during swim clinic. Support the YMCA vision to strengthen the foundations of the community thorough programs for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Minimum Requirements
  • Minimum age of 16

  • 1 year of coaching experience with various ages helpful
  • Applicant must have excellent teaching skills with expert knowledge of training and stroke development

  • Must pass a pre‑employment criminal background check, drug screen and motor vehicle record
  • Within 30 days of hire, Child Abuse Prevention, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens training
Responsibilities
  • Able to teach all groups by facilitating a training and/or practice plan as developed by the Head Coach
  • Help in evaluating swim team members individual goals; provide individual and team feedback for improvement and recognition

Work Requirements & Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions (non‑weather) and extreme heat (non‑weather). The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand; walk and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, or crouch.
