Job summary

YMCA is seeking a dedicated Swim Instructor to lead swimming lessons, promote water safety, and foster a caring, honest, and respectful learning environment. You will build strong relationships with students and families, maintain records, and participate in trainings to uphold YMCA standards.

The role requires current CPR, AED, First Aid certifications and YMCA swim instructor competency or equivalent, plus the ability to supervise aides and respond to emergencies.

Qualifications

  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification and Emergency Oxygen.
  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent.
  • Rescue skills and stroke water evaluation proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines with prepared lesson plans.
  • Build authentic relationships with students and parents and promote program involvement.
  • Convey information on aquatics programs and refer to other YMCA offerings as needed.
  • Maintain attendance and progress records, and report as required.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings; follow safety procedures and complete incident reports.
  • Organize equipment, supervise aides, prevent injuries, and administer First Aid when necessary.

POSITION SUMMARYThis position provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes. Ensure a positive atmosphere that promotes the YMCA’s four core values CARING – HONESTY – RESPECT – RESPONSIBILITY to increase skill and safety in and around water.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSInstructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.Maintains records as required on a timely basis (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.Observe, enforce and follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.Prevent injuries and minimize or eliminate hazardous situations.Administer First Aid as needed.Carry out all additional duties as assigned.YMCA COMPETENCIESMission Advancement: Accepts and demonstrates the Y’s values.
