Job summary

Apex Park and Recreation District in Colorado seeks a part-time swim instructor to provide safe, quality lessons for various age groups. You will teach content aligned with the course description and certification guidelines, monitor participants, and maintain accurate records.

You will prepare classes, set up equipment, enforce pool rules, and coordinate substitutes as needed. The role requires knowledge of swimming techniques, strong communication, and the ability to work in indoor/outdoor

Qualifications

  • Training – Starfish Aquatic Institute Certification preferred, training provided for selected candidates.
  • Experience - Previous instructional experience preferred.
  • Or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Job description

Provide safe and quality swim lesson instruction for various age groups.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach class content appropriate to the course description, level and within certification guidelines; monitor participants and assess skills; provide a safe environment for all participants; complete any necessary reports and forms, i.e., course records, attendance records, progress reports, etc.; responsible for finding a dependable, appropriate substitute upon their absence.
  • Perform related work as required and assigned.
  • Enforces all pool rules and regulations.
  • Responsible for preparation of class; prepares lesson plans, organizes teaching equipment; may be required to set-up and break-down materials used for instruction.
Average number of hours per week 12-15
  • Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Knowledge - Thorough knowledge of departmental rules and regulations; principles, practices; knowledge of swimming strokes and techniques; teaching methods and techniques that provide positive motivation; working knowledge of rules, strategies, and skills; organizational procedures.
  • Skills: Be able to proficiently perform various swim strokes for 25 yards; demonstrated skill in the operation of equipment necessary to perform the functions of the job.
  • Abilities - Instruct large groups of people; follow instructions; communicate effectively to the participants when teaching; analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine proper courses of action to be taken; analyze and correct facility safety hazards; write reports as necessary; learn and adhere to the facility emergency procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public.
EVIDENCE OF QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Work may take place in both indoor and outdoor environments, with exposure to varying weather conditions including sun, heat, cold, snow, and humidity.
  • Noise levels range from moderate to loud, often due to active children, group interactions, or busy transportation settings.
  • The position may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, chemically treated water, or other environmental irritants.
  • Work may occur in environments with poor acoustics, distractions, or high activity levels.
  • Some tasks will be performed in wet, humid, or damp environments, such as pools or aquatic facilities.
Physical Activities:
  • Ability to monitor participants, ensure safety, and respond to signals or emergencies.
  • Ability to react quickly and appropriately to the physical needs or emergencies of children or participants.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including speaking loudly, when necessary, in noisy or outdoor environments.
  • Duties may require sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, bending, or stooping for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, or sit on the floor as needed during activities or tasks.
  • Ability to reach, grasp, and handle small objects, tools, or equipment with precision.
