Job summary

YMCA of Greenville seeks a part-time Swim Lesson Coordinator to support aquatics programs, coordinate makeup lessons, and assist with scheduling and enrollment.

You will provide on-deck supervision when needed, support instructors, and ensure a welcoming, safe environment for participants and families.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• At least 2 years swim-instruction or aquatics programming experience preferred.
• Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 30 days (or as required).
• Current YMCA or American Red Cross lifeguard certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days, if required for on-deck responsibilities.
• Current swim-instructor certification or demonstrated ability to teach YMCA swim-lesson curriculum.
• Strong organizational, communication, and follow-through skills.

Job description

The YMCA of Greenville is a dynamic and rapidly growing association that seeks to strengthen the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Lesson Coordinator supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, this role coordinates assigned swim lesson operations, supports instructors, communicates with participants and families, and helps ensure programs are safe, organized, welcoming, and responsive to enrollment needs. This position organizes assigned work and provides on-deck direction and coaching but does not independently hire, discipline, terminate, set compensation, approve timecards or payroll, manage the department budget or expenses, or make final staffing decisions. These responsibilities remain with the Aquatics Director or other appropriate designated leadership. The coordinator is responsible for accurate private-lesson package redemption records and timely escalation of concerns and has the authority to direct assigned swim-lesson staff and coordinate day-to-day lesson operations during scheduled shifts.

Program Coordination and Participant Service & Program Growth

• Coordinate makeup lessons, including instructor and participant communication, scheduling, and follow-through.
• Assist the Aquatics Director with creating swim lesson schedules and offerings based on enrollment, staffing, pool availability, and program needs.
• Provide welcoming, responsive service to members, guests, participants, and parents.
• Address routine concerns promptly and work to support a positive customer experience and satisfaction with aquatics programs.
• Respond promptly and professionally to questions about swim programs, registration, schedules, placement, and procedures.
• Refer escalated concerns to the Aquatics Director.
• Monitor registration and waitlists and support enrollment goals through participant follow-up, marketing coordination, and outreach as assigned.
• Manage private lesson intake and maintain accurate package redemption records in accordance with established procedures.

Deck Operations and Instruction

• Provide on-deck supervision during assigned programming and support safe, timely program transitions and consistent lesson delivery.
• At the request of the Aquatics Director, assist with the lifeguard shift rotation and coverage coordination.
• Elevate staffing needs and final scheduling decisions to the Aquatics Director.
• Teach group and/or private swim lessons and provide operational coverage when scheduled and appropriately certified.

Instructor Support and Daily Communication

• Support instructor onboarding and training.
• Reinforce approved curriculum and safety expectations.
• Observe instruction and provide timely coaching and feedback.
• Provide day-of-program direction to assigned instructors and help secure substitutes or coverage as directed.
• Elevate performance, conduct, attendance, or safety concerns to the Aquatics Director.
• Complete a daily check-in with the Aquatics Director and communicate enrollment, staffing, participant, facility, and safety concerns.

Records Safety and Compliance

• Maintain accurate program records and protect confidential participant and employee information.
• Follow all YMCA safety, emergency-response, child-abuse-prevention, mandated-reporting, and risk-management policies and procedures.

Professional Expectations

• Attend required meetings, trainings, and in-services and perform other related duties as assigned.

Other Expectations

• Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
• Attend/complete required abuse risk management training.
• Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
• Follow mandated reporting requirements.
• Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
• Maintenance Employees-ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitor high-risk locations (locker-rooms and bathrooms), etc.
• Front Desk Personnel- ensure consumers are properly signed in and out, ensure only authorized adults are allowed in the facility, etc.

Schedule And Compensation

Hours vary based on program size, enrollment, season, and operational need. Administrative and supervisory hours may be reduced during mid-session periods or slower seasons. The Aquatics Director will establish the work schedule on a biweekly basis. Coordinator administrative and deck-supervision time is paid at the approved coordinator rate; time spent teaching group or private lessons is paid at the applicable instructional rate. The employee must accurately record all hours worked under the correct activity or pay code. All compensation and overtime will be administered in accordance with applicable law and YMCA payroll practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED required.
• At least two years of swim-instruction, aquatics-programming, or related teaching experience preferred.
• Experience supporting or coaching staff and providing strong customer service preferred.
• Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification from an approved provider, or ability to obtain within 30-days.
• Current YMCA or American Red Cross lifeguard certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days, if required for assigned on-deck responsibilities.
• Current swim-instructor certification or demonstrated ability to teach the YMCA swim-lesson curriculum, as required by branch practice.
• Strong organizational, communication, and follow-through skills; ability to manage multiple schedules and participant needs.
• Ability to use email, registration systems, and basic Microsoft Office applications.
