Job summary

YMCA of Greensboro is seeking a part-time Swim Instructor to provide direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes and private lessons. The role supports youth development, healthy living and social responsibility in a safety‑conscious environment.

The position requires teaching capability, adherence to YMCA guidelines, and certification within 6 months, with CPR/AED/First Aid current on hire.

Qualifications

  • Ability to swim 25 yards of 4 out of 6 strokes and tread water for 2 minutes.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Ability to read safety rules and write routine reports.
  • Must obtain YMCA Swim Instructor or ARC WSI certification within 6 months; CPR/AED/First Aid upon hire.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Swim Instructor is responsible for providing direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes and private swimming lessons. In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greensboro is responsible for carrying out our promise to strengthen the foundations of community with focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility while upholding our values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines by following prepared lesson plans accordingly. Strokes expected to be taught based on swim lesson stage are front crawl, backstroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke, breast stroke, and butterfly.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with all individuals associated with the swim lesson programs, helping them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement with minor students and identifies potential volunteers.
  • Conveys information on aquatic programs and schedules and as appropriate refers individuals to other programs.
  • Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, report cards, etc) and distributes appropriate reports for each session.
  • Attends all Aquatics staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Assists lifeguards as needed in emergency situations. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment and reports damaged equipment to supervisor.
  • Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
  • When pool is closed due to weather or contamination, employee is required to assist front desk with aquatic issues until pool re-opens.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires ability to proficiently swim 25 yards of 4 out of 6 strokes (front crawl, breast stroke, side stroke, backstroke, elementary backstroke, and butterfly). Must also be able to tread water for 2 minutes. Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before participants and parents. Ability to provide detailed instructions regarding swim techniques and break down stroke mechanics into simple steps. Must have sufficient organizational skills to get required reports completed and distributed in a timely fashion.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; swim and tread water and talk or hear. Must be able to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques. The employee is occasionally required to walk, stand, and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move equipment and a person up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus and ability see while in or out of the water.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals (chlorine), extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.
  • Swim Lesson Instructor requires YMCA Swim Instructor certification or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification with crossover of ARC WSI to YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification required within 6 months. A Swim Lesson Apprentice can be hired at a reduced rate for maximum of 6 months while completing the required training to be certified, during which time they will be required to co-teach with a certified instructor. If the apprentice has not completed the required training within the specified time, employment will be terminated. CPR for the professional rescuer, AED, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen Administration and Blood Borne Pathogen certification required upon hire for all and must be current at all times.
