Description

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

Under the direction of the Aquatic Director and in accordance with Association policies, the Swim Instructor will provide leadership, instruction, motivation, and a safe environment for students in swimming classes. The Swim Instructor should also act as a liaison and champion for the YMCA's core values.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Create a welcoming, nurturing, and genuine environment for all members and guests.
  2. Exercise mature judgment and strong decision-making, especially regarding safety.
  3. Develop rapport and maintain meaningful relationships with members, participants, and staff.
  4. Work collaboratively with other staff as part of a team.
  5. Conduct swim classes following the Y of the USA's Swimming Lesson Program in an enthusiastic and engaging manner, maximizing swimmer participation.
  6. Motivate others to develop self-awareness and self-confidence through swimming and aquatics.
  7. Complete and submit all required class paperwork.
  8. Communicate student progress to participants and/or their parents throughout the session.
  9. Maintain a positive and responsible attitude at all times.
  10. Participate in and complete mandatory in-service trainings.
  11. Uphold the YMCA's core values when interacting within facilities and the community.
  12. Work scheduled shifts, including weekends; arrangements for substitutes must be approved in advance by the Aquatics Director.
  13. Understand how children learn at different ages and relate to them in a fun, engaging, and captivating manner.
Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Applicants must pass an advanced swimming test, possess current state-approved First-Aid certification and CPR for the Professional Rescuer, be at least 15 years old, and demonstrate the ability to exercise mature judgment, ensure safety, relate positively and firmly, observe attentively, teach effectively in hot and humid environments, communicate YMCA programs effectively, lift a minimum of 50 lbs., and have full body mobility.
