Job summary

YMCA of Superior California is seeking a swim instructor to lead group and individual swim lessons, ensuring safety and encouraging participation. You will create lesson plans, motivate participants, and collaborate with staff to provide high-quality instruction across diverse age groups.

The role involves maintaining records, attending trainings, and coordinating with risk-management staff to uphold safety standards.

Qualifications

• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and Basic First Aid certifications required (available upon hire).
• Must demonstrate swim-instructor skills and competencies per YMCA standards.
• Active YMCA Swim Instructor certification available upon hire.

Responsibilities

• Instructs swim lessons as assigned per YMCA guidelines with prepared lesson plans.
• Develops positive relationships with members and participants; provides motivational support and guidance.
• Encourages member and parent involvement; identifies potential volunteers.
• Communicates information on aquatics programs and schedules; refers to other programs as appropriate.
• Maintains records (attendance, progress reports, etc.).
• Attends required staff meetings and trainings.
• Works with risk-management staff to ensure safety of participants.
• Follows YMCA policies, rules, and safety procedures; completes incident/accident reports.
• Organizes and stores class equipment; reports damaged equipment.
• Works with trainees to demonstrate high-quality lesson delivery.
• Meets all other expectations and requirements set by supervisor.

Job description

Provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in individual and group swim lessons. Instructs diverse community members, including people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

• Instructs swim lessons as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
• Develops positive relationships with members and participants and provides motivational support and guidance.

• Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
• Attends all required staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Works alongside risk-management staff to ensure safety of lesson and program participants.
• Follows and advocates all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
• Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
• Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
• Works alongside trainees to demonstrate high-quality lesson delivery as assigned by management.
• Meets all other expectations and employee requirements as assigned by your supervisor.

• Certifications Active American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification (available upon hire)
• Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills and competencies in accordance with YMCA standards.
• Active YMCA Swim Instructor certification (available upon hire)
• At least 15 years of age.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.

Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child
