Job summary

The YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee is seeking a part-time Swim Instructor to conduct classes in line with the YMCA Swim Lesson Program. You will teach all levels, monitor progress, and communicate with parents to foster engagement.

Requirements include CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and achieving YSL Instructor certification within 3 months. Ability to work in hot, humid pool environments and engage children and adults is essential.

Qualifications

  • Current CPR/AED certification.
  • First Aid certification.
  • Ability to obtain YMCA YSL Instructor certification within 3 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct all swim classes per YMCA Swim Lesson Program.
  • Teach all levels, maximize participation, complete required paperwork.

  • Maintain a professional demeanor while creating a fun, engaging environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducting all swim classes in accordance with the YMCA of the USA’s Swimming Lesson Program in an enthusiastic and exciting way.
  • Prepared to teach all levels of swimming, maximize swimmer participation every class period, complete and turn in all paperwork as required by supervisor.
  • Communicate student progress to swimmers and/or parents throughout a session with the intention of building meaningful relationships with participants.
  • Maintain a professional and responsible attitude and demeanor at all times, but will additionally demonstrate a genuine spirit of silliness that will provide participants with a sense of wonder and happiness by the end of every lesson.
Requirements
  • Current certifications in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Emergency Oxygen, and Standard First Aid preferred, but may be completed within 30 days of hire.
  • Achieve the YMCA Swimming Lesson (YSL) Instructor certification within 3 months of attaining a Swim Instructor position.
  • Must be able to pass a swimming skills test, which includes a 300yd swim with proper demonstration of all required strokes, 3 minutes of treading water, and retrieval of a 10 pound weight from 8-10 feet of water.
  • Must be able to teach in hot, humid environments.
  • Must be able to understand the mentality of children of various ages and adults and respond to their varying states of mind in a way that is fun-loving, engaging, and captivating to students.

Work Environment, Physical Demands and Child Safety:

This position may include a combination of in-office and remote work, based on operational needs. Workspace may be shared with other staff when on-site. All YMCA Staff are mandated by law to report child abuse and neglect to Child Protective Services. Such reports can be made verbally at 1-855-444-3911. Staff will also report suspected abuse or neglect to their supervisor, senior management, or Human Resources.
