Job description

The White Bear Lake YMCA is seeking experienced Swim Instructors. Multiple shifts available, with priority given to candidates with daytime (morning and/or afternoon) availability. We also offer a Swim Instructor in Training role for those who are strong swimmers, can pass a swim assessment, and are interested in becoming trained as a Swim Instructor at the Y.

1. Job Summary:

The Swim Instructor is responsible for providing swimming instruction to individuals of all ages, following the YMCA of the USA Aquatics and Swim Lessons guidelines. The role involves delivering excellent customer service in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes safety and satisfaction, in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

2. Essential Functions:
  • Provide swimming instruction to students of various ages and ability levels.
  • Maintain constant supervision of students, watch for swimmers needing assistance, and aid swimmers when necessary to ensure a positive learning environment.
  • Understand and communicate policies and procedures for the pool and whirlpool.
  • Familiarize with the YMCA Swim Lessons program, including levels and skills taught at each level. Evaluate students and recommend appropriate placement.
3. Relationships:

This position reports to the Aquatics Supervisor or Director, who reports to the Senior Director of Aquatics or Senior Aquatics Manager. The incumbent interacts regularly with supervisors, staff, volunteers, and participants.

4. Qualifications:

Required:

  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Completion of YMCA Swim Instructor Skills Verification.
  • Patience and effective communication skills with all ages and levels of swimmers.
  • Ability to swim in shallow and deep water, and tread water (Stage 4 level swimming skill).
  • Commitment to member safety and the YMCA’s mission and philosophy.

Preferred:

  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification.
5. Work Conditions:
  • Must remain in the pool area at all times.
  • Support body weight in water for children or adults.
  • Remain alert in a warm environment of 80°F or higher.
  • Recognize and address hazardous situations calmly and effectively.
  • Communicate verbally, projecting voice across distances and in loud situations.
  • Perform physical tasks including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds in a warm pool environment.
