Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate knowledge of Red Cross or other certifying agency standards and use materials effectively.
  • Ensure safety of participants and maintain hazard-free teaching and practice areas.
  • Complete needed paperwork and communicate progress to participants and parents.
  • Respectfully manage disagreements and maintain positive rapport with patrons.
  • Arrive on time for shifts and manage coverage; stay calm in emergencies.
  • Maintain regular communication with supervisory team and exercise integrity.
  • Attend trainings and meetings within the department.
  • Balance time commitments and contribute as a team member.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The Department of Campus Recreation is seeking Penn State students to fill the position of Swim Instructor. Campus Recreation is a department within Student Affairs that provides fitness, wellness, and recreational programs to the campus community through the operation and administration of the new expanded and renovated 200,000 sf Intramural Building, the McCoy Natatorium, the 700-acre Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, a Tennis Center including six clay courts and four indoor courts, the White Building, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness Programs, and Intramural Sports.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Instruct group and private swim lessons to a variety of ages, experiences, learning styles and abilities of participants, meeting the outlined goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrate confidence and knowledge of American Red Cross Parent-Child, Preschool, Learn to Swim and Adult levels or other certifying agency standards and use material effectively.
  • Ensure safety of participants, maintain hazard‑free teaching and practice areas, and keep equipment safe.
  • Complete needed paperwork and communicate regularly with participants and parents to ensure they are aware of progress and set up private lessons.
  • Respectfully manage disagreements and model positive rapport with patrons (including in online communities).
  • Arrive on time for all assigned shifts or secure appropriate coverage, and remain calm in stressful or emergency situations.
  • Maintain regular and frequent communication with supervisory team, use independent judgment, and exhibit a strong sense of integrity.
  • Attend and participate in all trainings and meetings within employee and department wide.
  • Balance time commitments, recognize limitations and work to improve and function as a contributing member of the Penn State Campus Recreation team.

WORK HOURS AND LOCATION

Swim Instructors can work a maximum of 24 hours per week (20 hours for International Students) during the academic year and 40 hours per week during breaks. Work will take place on the University Park Campus White Building or McCoy Natatorium (indoor or outdoor). Must accommodate a variable work schedule that includes mornings, evenings, weekends and some holiday hours.
