Job summary

Qualifications

Job Summary

The Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching group, private and semi‑private swimming lessons to students, faculty, staff, and community members using the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program materials. The instructor ensures the safety of participants utilizing the pool and facility, teaches students to Red Cross standards, and communicates effectively with participants and the Aquatics and Safety Coordinator to schedule and complete lessons.

Responsibilities

• Teach group, private and semi‑private swimming lessons using American Red Cross materials.
• Ensure the safety of participants and the proper maintenance of the pool facility.
• Communicate effectively with participants and coordinate lesson scheduling with the Aquatics and Safety Coordinator.

Qualifications

• Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification or equivalent nationally recognized certification.
• Current American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with Basic First Aid.
• Excellent interpersonal communication, teamwork, and customer service skills.
• Preferred: American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification and prior experience teaching private swim lessons.

Academic Eligibility

50/50 eligible position; student must be enrolled full‑time with at least a 2.0 GPA.

Physical Requirements

• Medium work; can exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 30 pounds frequently.
• Includes bending, reaching, standing, lifting, and other physical tasks as described in the job’s physical activity overview.

Environmental Conditions

• Work may involve indoor and outdoor pool areas with exposure to temperature variations, fumes, odors, dust, or mists.
