Job summary

The Student Union, Inc. at San José State University is seeking a Swim Instructor to provide safe, structured swim lessons for youth and adults under the supervision of the Aquatic Manager.

Instructors will tailor instruction to different learning styles, track progress, maintain class records, and communicate swimmer development to parents and staff while upholding safety standards. This role supports the Student Union mission to connect, engage, and inspire Spartan pride within the SJSU

Responsibilities

• Provide safe, structured swim lessons for youth and adults under the supervision of the Aquatic Manager.
• Instruct swim classes, tailor teaching to different learning styles, and plan class time for maximum skill development.
• Maintain records of class content and progression, and provide progress feedback to students and parents.
• Stay current with teaching methods and participate in safety efforts, including Lifeguard coordination where applicable.
• Assist with prep of spaces and equipment for swim lessons and collaborate with staff on duty.

The Student Union, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center (PCUEC), and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Aquatic Manager, Swim Instructors provide safe and structured swim lessons to youth and adults. Swim Instructors will have thorough knowledge of swimming and different learning styles for various age groups. Swim Instructors will provide progression‑based activities to support a child or client’s swimming ability, development, and growth while supporting the Student Union, Inc. mission to connect, engage, and inspire Spartan pride within the SJSU Community.

Essential Functions and Tasks

• Responsible to provide a safe and credible swim lesson program.
• Instruct swim classes for children and adults.
• Plan and effectively organize class time to maximize skills and success.
• Maintain and provide records related to class content and progression notes for participants.
• Provide feedback to students and parents regarding a swimmer’s progress.
• Stay current with new teaching methods and techniques.
• Assist with patron safety to prevent emergencies.
• Administer First Aid, CPR, or AED, if needed.
• Prepare spaces and equipment for swim lessons.
• Work as a team with other staff on duty, including lifeguards, facility staff, and management.
• Arrive promptly and prepared for scheduled class sessions.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
