Essential Functions
  • Instruct swimming lessons according to YMCA guidelines, with prepared lesson plans.
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; connect them with each other and the YMCA.
  • Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules; refer students and parents to other programs as appropriate.
  • Maintain records such as attendance and progress reports.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and safety procedures; complete incident and accident reports when necessary.
  • Organize and store class equipment; report damaged equipment.
  • Report to duty 10 minutes before shift; arrange substitutes if needed with proper notification.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 16
  • Required Certifications: YMCA approved basic lifesaving including CPR, AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen administration
  • Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent
  • Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire
  • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
  • Demonstrate swim instructor skills per YMCA standards
Work Environment & Physical Demands

The physical demands include working in indoor and outdoor aquatic environments, instructing and observing participants, lifting equipment and small children, hearing distress signals, visual acuity for observing all areas, responding to medical emergencies, sitting and standing for long periods, and holding breath underwater when necessary. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities.

  • Work is performed in aquatic environments.
  • Must be able to instruct and observe proper stroke techniques.
  • Physical ability to lift equipment and children.
  • Alertness to detect distress and respond to emergencies.
  • Visual acuity to monitor all zones.
