Job summary

The South Oakland Family YMCA is seeking a part-time Swim Instructor to lead swimming lessons at the Royal Oak location. You will develop plans, teach students, and engage with families to share progress and successes.

Minimum high school education with CPR/First Aid certifications. YMCA Swim Instructor certification preferred or provided. Flexible scheduling and a supportive, family‑oriented work environment are offered.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years old or older.
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications are required or provided.
• Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent training will be considered.

Responsibilities

• Instruct swimming lessons and prepare lesson plans.
• Build authentic relationships with parents and students and communicate progress.
• Explain aquatics programs and schedules and refer to other programs.
• Maintain records, attend trainings, and perform additional duties as assigned.

General Function

The Swim Instructor provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes.

Education/Experience/Training/Certifications

• At a minimum, some high school level education (over 16+ years of age)
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification, and Emergency Oxygen
• Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification OR training provided.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Instructs swimming lessons and prepares lesson plans according to the YMCA.
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with parents and students to connect and inform parents of each other and students’ accomplishments.
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and refers students and parents to other programs.
• Maintains records and attends meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Abilities & Skills

• Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
• Ability to lift equipment and to lift a small to average‑sized child.
