POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility . The Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching Y Skippers and/or Progressive Swimming lessons for children and adults according to National YMCA standards. Programs are operated in a manner that ensures the safety of the participants and promotes the mission and goals of the YMCA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Program
  • Teach and demonstrate swimming skills based on YMCA and American Red Cross standards.
  • Develop weekly class outlines, demonstrating an orderly progression through skills.
  • Treat all participants fairly and equally, regardless of ability, ensuring the development of positive self-esteem.
  • Discipline according to YMCA policy.
  • Follow YMCA Emergency Procedures, as needed.
  • Ensure participants are aware of, and follow, all safety rules.
  • Incorporate YMCA philosophy through focus on the development of Spirit, Mind, and Body into all lessons and teaching methods.
  • Facility
  • Keep program area orderly and store equipment appropriately.
  • Report any repair or maintenance issues to Aquatic Management Staff.
  • Administration
  • Maintain accurate attendance and skill progression records.
  • Report mid-session advancement recommendations to Director of Swim Lessons prior to the start of the next session registration.
  • Complete individual evaluations of participants and make recommendations for advancement at the end of each session.
  • Submit request for supplies or equipment to Director of Swim Lessons.
  • Association
  • Obtain additional knowledge through attendance at workshops and trainings and keep certifications current. Obtain all required YMCA trainings within 45 days of hire.
  • Dress according to YMCA and Department Policy.
  • Attend all department and branch staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Assist with other association projects and programs as needed.

    Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Incumbent must be at least 16 years of age.
    • Incumbent must have the appropriate educational/employment experience to successfully provide instruction.
    • Must pass a swim stroke evaluations test.

    Upon hire:

    • Current Child & Infant and Adult CPR, AED and First Aid must be obtained within 30-days of hire and be current throughout length of employment.
    • South Sound YMCA’s - New Employee Orientation must be obtained within 45-days of hire.

    PART-TIME BENEFITS:

    • Paid sick time (one hour accrued for every 40 hours worked).

    WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, and talk and hear. Incumbent must be able to move freely and quickly throughout YMCA facilities; communicate effectively with people; and use a computer.The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
