Job summary

City of Mason is seeking a part-time swim lesson instructor to provide supervised aquatic instruction for patrons in the department’s programs, ensuring safety and adherence to the curriculum.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Previous swim lesson instructor experience preferred.
  • In-water and out-of-water training provided after hiring with shadowing.
  • Ability to work a dynamic schedule including mornings, evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality instruction in water safety, swimming, and diving within the program curriculum.
  • Provide appropriate supervision to all participants and ensure safety.
  • Prepare and maintain administrative records as requested.
  • Attend in-service training sessions and staff meetings.
  • Uphold policies and procedures of City of Mason and Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures and administer first aid when needed.

General Statement of Duties and Distinguishing Features of Class

To provide supervised, structured aquatic and/or water safety instruction to patrons enrolled in the department’s aquatic programs.

Examples of Work (Illustrative Only)
  • Provide quality instruction in water safety, swimming, and/or diving techniques, within the scope of his/her training and within the curriculum of the Swim Americaprogram and/or other governing agencies.
  • Provide appropriate supervision to all participants.
  • Ensures the safety of program participants.
  • Prepares and maintains administrative records and paperwork as requested.
  • Attends in-service training sessions and/or staff meetings as requested.
  • Uphold the policies and procedures of the City of Mason and Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Display knowledge of the department’s Infectious Material & Exposure Incident Policy and facility Emergency Action Procedures.
  • Administer and record any necessary first aid/victim care within the level of emergency training.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of all emergency procedures throughout the recreational areas.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: The following is preferred
  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Previous experience as a swim lesson instructor is preferred.
  • In-water and out-of-water training will be provided upon hiring along with shadowing opportunities under the guidance of a current instructor
  • Enjoy the flexibility to mix up your week-we’re looking for someone who’s excited to work a dynamic schedule that could include mornings, evenings and weekends.
Physical Requirements
  • Sufficient physical strength, stamina, and conditioning to rescue swimmers in danger of drowning who may resist rescue and to work for sustained periods of time under varying weather conditions.
  • Occasional lifting up to 75 pounds as well as possible lifting of an injured individual.
  • Some exposure and working with possible hazardous chemicals.
  • Frequent exposure to noise levels that may cause distractions, listening and visual observations required at all times.
  • Eyesight and Hearing: You must be able to visually scan area to spot distressed swimmers. Must clearly hear calls for help, whistles, or co-worker communications over the loud ambient noise of a pool.
  • Position may require standing, sitting, and kneeling for extended periods of time.

Summary

Candidates must be available to work a minimum of two of the following shifts.

Evenings: Monday – Thursday 4:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Mornings: Monday – Thursday & Saturday 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Afternoon: Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
