As a key member of the Aquatics team, a Swim instructor teaches both youth and adults swimming techniques & pool safety, and is responsible for proactive communication and maintaining a safe pool atmosphere while preventing accidents. The main purpose of this position is to provide a positive role model for members and to create a character-developing atmosphere.
Essential Responsibilities
- Uphold the mission of the YMCA, and demonstrate behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature.
- Must be able to remain alert
- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals
- Ability to teach with patience and caring attitude
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations
- Must be able to remain in water for long periods of time
- Responsible for scheduled classes/shifts & for following appropriate substitutes procedures
- Arrive 15 minutes prior to class start time to set up and greet participants
- Clean up all equipment and pool deck after classes have ended
- Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required by the Aquatics’ Director
Position Requirements
- Minimum age of 15
- Team player with personal commitment to the YMCA Mission, Philosophy, & Character Development Values
- People centered, service oriented
- YMCA Youth Swim Lesson Instructor preferred, but we will train
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Previous lifeguard experience preferred, but we will train
- Must be able to swim and demonstrate strokes
- Obtain CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications (within 90 days of employment)
Physical Demands
- Must be able to remain alert
- Work in a wet/humid environment and come into contact with chlorine
- Must be able to remain in the pool for extended periods of time
- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals
- Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations
- Environment may include indoor and/or outdoor pool conditions
- Ability to lift 25 pounds
- Noise level-High
