Job summary

Greater Somerset County YMCA seeks a part-time Swim Instructor to provide private and group swim instruction on-site at Somerset County facilities. You will foster a safe, engaging learning environment and build rapport with members while teaching strokes and water safety.

The role requires YSL/WSI (or equivalents), CPR/AED, First Aid, and ongoing YMCA trainings with a strong emphasis on customer service and safety practices. Benefits include membership access and growth opportunities.

Qualifications

• YSL and/or WSI certification (obtain upon hire).
• CPR/AED and First Aid (obtain upon hire).
• Current Blood borne Pathogens certification (obtain upon hire).
• SH YMCA Child Abuse Prevention Training within 30 days of hire.
• SH YMCA New Staff Orientation Training within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a safe, instructional, and supportive environment for swim lessons.
• Teach correct stroke technique, water safety and endurance.
• Lead preschool and school-aged group classes in a positive manner.
• Engage members with friendly, professional service in the aquatics area.
• Attend trainings, seminars and meetings as required.

General Function

The Swim Instructor serves members though Swim Lessons. S/he builds relationships with members and program participants through effective and positive customer service while providing a safe instructional environment. This job is fully on-site, not remote.

Essential duties

Private Swim Instruction:

• Maintains a safe, instructional, and supportive environment.
• Teaches students the principles of correct stroke, water safety, and swimming endurance
• Teaches group classes to preschool and school aged children
• Develops appropriate introduction to a variety of water sports/activities

General:

• Engages all members/participants in a professional and courteous manner:
• Greet/say hello and goodbye to all participants in the aquatics area and learn members names and call them by their names
• Listen and be accessible to all members for questions and comments
• Follow-up as needed
• Engages members on new classes, new changes, etc.
• Maintains proper functioning/cleanliness and/or report malfunctioning of Water area/equipment to supervisor
• Redirects members on cell phones to front lobby
• Adheres and incorporate the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility and educates members about the YMCA mission and goals
• Complies with all Somerset Hills YMCA Policies and Procedures
• Attends trainings, seminars and meetings as required

Other duties:

• Arrives to work five (5) minutes before shift starts
• Wear appropriate and professional uniform/attire
• All other duties as assigned

Requirements

Required education/certifications:

• YSL and/or WSI certification (obtain upon hire)
• CPR/AED and First Aid (obtain upon hire)
