Job summary

VIAVI Solutions Inc. in California is seeking a Sustaining Engineer to manage BOMs, analyze product designs for manufacturability, and collaborate with manufacturing to resolve issues across the product lifecycle.

You will apply quality tools (FMEA, 8D, SPC), document changes, and drive continuous improvement in cost, quality, and process efficiency while working with cross-functional teams and supporting field returns.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in Sustaining Engineering or similar role within a manufacturing environment.
• Strong understanding and practical experience with Bill of Materials (BOM) management.
• Demonstrated expertise in manufacturability principles and their application in product design and production.
• Solid knowledge of manufacturing operations and various manufacturing processes.
• Proficiency in quality analysis and the application of various quality techniques (e.g., FMEA, 8D, SPC).
• Excellent problem-solving skills with a methodical approach to root cause analysis.
• Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Responsibilities

• Manage and update Bills of Materials (BOM) to reflect design changes, component obsolescence, and manufacturing optimizations.
• Analyze product designs and manufacturing processes to ensure manufacturability and identify areas for improvement.
• Collaborate with manufacturing operations to troubleshoot production issues, implement corrective actions, and improve overall line efficiency.
• Apply various quality techniques and perform quality analysis to identify root causes of product failures and implement robust solutions.
• Support existing products by addressing field returns, customer complaints, and internal quality escapes through effective sustaining engineering practices.
• Participate in design reviews and provide feedback on new product designs to ensure they meet manufacturing and quality standards.
• Document engineering changes, manufacturing procedures, and quality specifications thoroughly.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to product quality, cost reduction, and process optimization.
