Work is field‑oriented (90% in the outdoors) with occasional office duties. A valid driver's license is required, and immigration sponsorship is not available except for TN visa eligibility.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or related field, or equivalent mix of education and experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License Required.
  • Experience with CAD is a plus but not required.

Position Summary: JMT is currently seeking Surveying Technician / Inspector I in the Sylva, North Carolina Office. The successful candidate for this position will adjust and operate surveying instruments, such as the theodolite and electronic distance-measuring equipment, and compiles notes, make sketches and enter data into computers. They will also assist the survey team by gathering and maintaining specified data for construction surveying. Finally, they will complete simple routine tasks under close supervision.

Immigration sponsorship or support (e.g. H1B, F-1 CPT/OPT/STEM OPT) is not available for this position, except for qualified candidates eligible for the TN visa classification.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Place and hold measuring tapes when electronic distance-measuring equipment
  • Position and hold the vertical rods, or targets, that theodolite operators use for sighting in-order-to measure angles, distances, and elevations
  • Record survey measurements and descriptive data, using notes, drawings, sketches, and inked tracings
  • Run rods for benches and cross-section elevations
  • Search for section corners, property irons, and survey points
  • Set out and recover stakes, marks, and other monumentation
  • Adjust and operate surveying instruments such as prisms, theodolites, and electronic distance-measuring equipment
  • Compile information necessary to stake projects for construction, using engineering plans
  • Conduct surveys using electronic distance-measuring equipment and other surveying instruments
  • Maintain equipment and vehicles used by surveying crews
  • Perform manual labor, such as cutting brush for lines, carrying stakes, rebar, and other heavy items, and stacking rods

  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Skills
  • Experience with Computer Assisted Drafting (CAD) is a plus but not required for hire, accurate data entry skills, ability to operate and master various electronic devices and software programs as needed for surveying and mapping
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written and oral instructions
  • Ability to solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Must successfully complete and pass JMT's Motor Vehicle screening
  • Able to pass Background Check
Required Experience
  • Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in heavy construction
  • Valid Driver’s License Required

Working Conditions

Work is performed in the field 90% of the time. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. The employee may be required to hike into remote areas or work in heavily congested and populated areas.

Work is performed within a general office environment 10% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Anticipated travel 20% of the time.
