Surveying Technician I - Rodman/Instrument Operator

Position Summary:

Seeking Surveying Technician I - Rodman/Instrument Operators for our offices in New Bern, Sylva, and Asheville, NC. Responsibilities include operating surveying instruments such as Total Stations, GPS, and levels, taking field notes, making sketches, and data entry. This position is not eligible for employer sponsorship except for TN visas.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  1. Position and hold prism rods or targets for measuring angles, distances, and elevations.
  2. Record survey measurements and descriptive data.
  3. Run levels and level rods for benchmarks and elevations.
  4. Search for property monuments and survey points.
  5. Set and recover stakes and monumentation.
  6. Operate surveying instruments such as prisms, Total Stations, and GPS equipment.
  7. Compile information for project staking using engineering plans.
  8. Maintain equipment and load supplies.
  9. Perform manual labor such as clearing lines of sight and carrying materials.
Required Skills:
  • Must pass JMT's Motor Vehicle screening.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Proficiency with CAD, data entry, and electronic surveying devices.
  • Ability to compute ratios, interpret graphs, and perform basic math operations.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work in small groups.
  • Problem-solving skills involving concrete variables.
Preferred Experience:
  • Associate's degree in Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field or relevant experience.
  • No prior experience necessary but preferred.
Working Conditions:

Fieldwork 90%, involving bending, kneeling, standing, lifting up to 30 lbs., in various outdoor conditions. Office work 10%, sedentary, within a safe environment. Anticipated travel is 20%.
