Job summary

Cooper Steel is seeking a Survey Technician to operate surveying equipment, gather accurate field data, and support steel placement on site. You will work with field teams to establish control lines, locate anchor points, and provide as-built information as required.

The role requires at least 3 years in steel erection, strong communication, and safety focus, with willingness to travel 100%. Lifting up to 75 lbs and environment at heights may be involved, with overtime as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in steel erection.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with field teams and other trades.
  • Comfort working at heights and in varying conditions.
  • Familiarity with AISC building orientation and alignment requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Operate surveying equipment to collect and display field data for use by field teams.
  • Establish and cross-reference building control lines and anchor rod locations.
  • Assist with column placement and steel installation alignment and verification.
  • Provide as-built survey data and support quality checks on plumbness and alignment.
  • Coordinate with other trades to ensure accurate steel placement and field layout.
  • Support project teams with layout, troubleshooting, and on-site coordination.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Position Summary

The Survey Technician is responsible for utilizing surveying equipment to gather and accurately display data to provide to the field teams use. In addition, their duties include aiding with the critical placement of steel members and other trades work that affects steel placement.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Promote a strong quality culture throughout the company maintaining Cooper Steel’s core priorities: Safety, Quality, Production
  • Enforce company safety policies and maintain a strong safety culture
  • Utilize surveying equipment to gather and accurately display data for practical field use
  • Establish and cross reference established building control lines
  • Provide and establish column placement / anchor rod locations and elevations
  • Assist with method of information delivery for column / steel install alignment (marking center points on foundation, marking bolts, etc.)
  • Creating a useable anchor rod survey and anchor rod projection / location results and plumbness surveys
  • Provide as-built drawings when needed
  • Quality control of building plumbness and square
  • Assist with miscellaneous steel placement (monumental stair, shaft, steel, etc.)
  • Assist with crane beam install and provide survey of installed beams
  • Assist with coordination of steel that correlates other trades work that effects steel placement and accuracy
  • Assist project teams with layout and troubleshooting issues
  • Other duties as assigned

Education And/Or Experience

Minimum of 3 years of experience in steel erection preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience

Strong functional and technical skills; ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals; good judgment; strong attention to detail; ability to work effectively with others. While performing certain duties of the job, the employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, twist, lift, pull, and reach. Use of hands for gripping and grasping required. Specific vision abilities are required. Lifting is required up to 75 lbs. Must be flexible in hours worked and willing to work overtime. Understand AISC requirements for building orientation and alignment is required. You will also be required to work from heights in an aerial lift of from elevated steel floors.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Position performs work in the field environment including job site conditions, varying terrain, weather conditions, ability to access multi-level structures, use of personal protective equipment, machine / equipment use. This position is 100% travel with paid rotation schedule.
