Job summary

Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, LLC (ICE) is seeking a Survey Intern to gain hands-on experience with our Survey team. The internship spans 12 weeks and offers growth opportunities within ICE.

The role requires completion of background and drug screenings and is on-site. You will work with boundary, topographic, and transportation surveys, operate total stations, GPS, and data collectors, and learn from a dedicated ICE mentor.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a BS in Civil Engineering or related field; junior or senior preferred.
• Academic Juniors and Seniors preferred.
• Prior internship experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist in boundary, topographic, right-of-way, transportation, and road/bridge surveys.
• Operate survey equipment including total station, levels, GPS, and data collectors.
• Make arithmetic and geometric calculations, and perform inspection and maintenance of surveying equipment.
• Work in all weather, adjacent to vehicular traffic, on varied terrain and on steel beams over water.
• Collaborate with General Contractors, Subcontractors, the public, and the SCDOT.

Job Summary

As a Survey Intern at ICE, you will gain valuable industry experience by working with our Survey team. Internships with ICE allow you to continue your education with a real-world experience that will enhance your future academic experiences. There is room for growth within our organization for dedicated civil engineering professionals. All employment offers are contingent upon the applicant successfully completing drug and background screenings. Internships provide an opportunity to be part of adiverse and engaged community of professionals and to be treated as a respected and valued member of the ICE team. The internship will span 12 weeks.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the performance of boundary, topographic, right-of-way, transportation, and road and bridge construction surveys.
• Operate various surveying equipment including total station, levels, GPS, and data collectors.
• Make arithmetic and geometric calculations, (i.e. percentages, ratio, averages), performs inspection and maintenance of surveying equipment.
• Ability to work (1) in all types of weather, (2) adjacent to vehicular traffic, (3) on all types of terrain, and (4) on steel beams over water.
• Work in a team-oriented manner with General Contractors, Subcontractors, public, and the SCDOT.

Career Development – ICE Mentor

Internships do not always include mentorship; however, we believe it is a crucial part to the success of our program. ICE interns are paired with more experienced staff members in order to provide guidance and support throughout the internship process. They will report directly to a team lead who will provide regular feedback, special training, guidance, evaluation, and support. The lead will provide information about their career path, as well as assisting the intern with exploring career opportunities at the firm, setting goals, developing contacts, and identifying resources.

We foster collaborative learning environment where interaction with our dedicated team of engineers encourages students to develop ideas and make mistakes. Collaborative learning also involves learning from peers and fellow interns. The primary goal of the internship is to gain as much experience as possible. While an intern may not have major tasks assigned to them, they should pay close attention to all the steps that go into completing the project. At the end of the internship, the intern should be confident to individually manage project tasks and work independently. ICE’s dedicated recruiting team will assist the intern with full-time employment opportunities, once they are ready to graduate.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

The role involves moderate physical activity such as walking, standing, bending, and climbing stairs or ladders. Employees may occasionally lift objects weighing up to 80 pounds. It is essential for employees to navigate construction sites skillfully and conduct thorough inspections of materials and structures.

Employees must have the ability to visually discern and differentiate details and colors of objects, and proficiency in recognizing sound, tone, and pitch. Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary. The role demands adaptability to interruptions and changes in workflow, as well as the capacity to sit for extended periods. Employees must be capable of working in varied environmental conditions, including hot, cold, and noisy settings, and be able to stand and walk during site visits. Additionally, working on construction projects may involve night work and weekend work depending on the project scope and may include working in conditions with active traffic.

Expected Hours of Work

The ICE offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing an unpaid hour for lunch daily. Work schedules may vary according to the project schedule. This is an onsite position reporting to the ICE office 5 days a week.
