Job summary

Dresdner Robin in Fairfield, New Jersey is seeking an experienced Survey Crew Chief to lead a field crew and ensure the safe, accurate completion of field assignments across New Jersey and the surrounding region.

The successful candidate will independently organize fieldwork, direct field personnel, resolve field challenges, and provide complete field data to Survey Project Managers and technical staff. Strong leadership and communication are essential.

Job description

Dresdner Robin is seeking an experienced Survey Crew Chief to work from our Fairfield, New Jersey office. This individual will lead a survey field crew and be responsible for the safe, accurate, and efficient completion of field assignments throughout New Jersey and the surrounding region.

The successful candidate must be capable of independently organizing and executing survey fieldwork, directing field personnel, resolving routine field challenges, and providing complete and accurate field data to our Survey Project Managers and technical staff.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and direct a survey field crew in the completion of boundary, ALTA/NSPS, topographic, utility, as built, construction layout, and other land surveying assignments.
  • Review project scopes, record documents, deeds, filed maps, construction plans, and available survey information before beginning fieldwork.
  • Plan and organize daily field assignments in coordination with Survey Project Managers.
  • Perform field reconnaissance and recover boundary, right of way, easement, and control monumentation.
  • Operate robotic total stations, GNSS equipment, digital levels, data collectors, scanners, and other modern surveying equipment.
  • Perform field calculations, establish survey control, evaluate closures, and verify the quality and completeness of collected data.
  • Interpret construction plans and specifications and perform accurate construction layout and stakeout.
  • Prepare complete and legible field notes, sketches, photographs, point descriptions, and other supporting documentation.
  • Properly code, organize, transfer, download, back up, and store survey data in accordance with company standards.
  • Identify field conflicts, boundary concerns, access limitations, safety issues, and scope questions and communicate them promptly to the Survey Project Manager.
  • Train, direct, and mentor Survey Field Technicians assigned to the crew.
  • Maintain assigned survey equipment, tools, and vehicles and immediately report any maintenance or repair needs.
  • Follow company safety procedures and maintain a professional presence when interacting with clients, contractors, property owners, and the public.
  • Assist with field preparation, data review, survey calculations, and other office related assignments when required by the prevailing workload.

This is primarily an outdoor field position and requires working in varying weather, terrain, traffic, and site conditions.

Position Qualifications

Applicants must be able to demonstrate the following qualifications and skills:

  • Minimum of five years of progressive land surveying field experience, including demonstrated experience independently leading a survey crew.
  • Strong working knowledge of boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, as built, utility, and construction surveys.
  • Proficiency operating robotic total stations, GNSS equipment, data collectors, digital levels, and related survey equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret deeds, filed maps, survey plans, construction drawings, engineering plans, and technical specifications.
  • Ability to perform field calculations and evaluate survey control, traverses, closures, and collected data.
  • Sound field judgment with the ability to recognize potential boundary conflicts, missing information, and conditions requiring review by the Professional Land Surveyor.
  • Ability to produce complete and legible field notes, sketches, photographs, and electronic survey records.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Windows based computer systems. Experience with AutoCAD, Carlson, Civil 3D, Leica, or similar surveying software and equipment is a plus.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. An associate degree, bachelor’s degree, CST certification, SIT certification, or related professional development is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel to project sites throughout New Jersey and the surrounding region.
  • Ability to lift and carry survey equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to drive stakes, reinforcing bars, and property corner markers and safely use drills, chisels, grinders, manhole hooks, and other hand tools.
  • Ability and willingness to open manhole structures and obtain underground utility information, including pipe sizes, materials, invert elevations, and routing.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required and complete occasional out of town assignments or overnight stays.
Compensation

Dresdner Robin offers competitive compensation commensurate with the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and demonstrated ability to independently lead survey field operations. Overtime opportunities are available based upon project requirements.
