Job summary

Job description

Survey Party Chief

Location: Albuquerque, NM.

WSP is searching for a Survey Party Chief to join our Albuquerque location. The role involves supervising a survey crew, maintaining state‑of‑the‑art surveying equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety and surveying standards.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise a crew of 1–2 survey teams
  • Maintain accurate, organized field notes
  • Communicate daily with office staff
  • Operate and maintain robotic instruments, total stations, SDATA collector, GPS (fast static, RTK, VRS), and digital levels
  • Obtain historical data from property/utility records, deeds, titles, structural plans, and other sources for surveying activities
  • Follow state standards of practice to provide accurate survey data and verify conformance with applicable rules, codes, boundaries, and construction specifications
  • Write surveying reports summarizing site inspections and findings, incorporating photographs, sketches, calculations, software outputs, spreadsheets, technical drawings, 2D/3D illustrations, and reports
  • Collaborate with engineers, scientists, project control, and technicians on assigned survey tasks
  • Perform weekly instrument calibrations to maintain accuracy
  • Ensure daily compliance with WSP and client safety guidelines and submit required safety documentation
  • Interact with client personnel as needed to schedule and coordinate survey activities
  • Stay current on latest survey knowledge, techniques, and practices
  • Exercise responsible, ethical decision‑making regarding funds, resources, and conduct in line with WSP’s Code of Conduct and policies
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • At least 5 years of post‑education experience in surveying, including easements, rights‑of‑way, plats, topographic surveys, boundary surveys, and GPS surveys
  • Excellent communication and field‑note taking skills
  • Strong math skills and ability to work independently as a one‑person crew when necessary
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and operate in construction and field environments
  • Experience with public and private sector work (state, city, county, utility districts, private development)
  • Availability to travel as projects dictate
  • Self‑leadership, attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritizing responsibilities in a dynamic environment
  • Successful completion of WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening and possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, and anti‑discrimination policies
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Leica‑based survey equipment (preferred, but not required)
  • Experience with DOT survey and SUE
  • Transmission and distribution line survey experience
  • Knowledge of FAA sUAS Part 107 requirements and sUAS pilot licensure with relevant flight experience
  • An associate’s degree in surveying, engineering technology, or related field
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
