Survey Crew Chief

Location: Asheville, NC

Overview

WSP is seeking a Survey Crew Chief to lead and supervise survey crews, ensuring accurate and complete field data while maintaining a safe work environment. The role offers ongoing training and mentoring, opportunities for promotion, and a stable backlog of local work with minimal travel.

Responsibilities

• Supervise Survey Crew (1‑2 staff crews)
• Keep accurate, organized and complete field notes
• Communicate with office staff on a daily basis
• Operate and maintain robotic instrument, total stations, sdata collector, GPS (fast static, RTK and VRS), digital levels
• Use and obtain historical data from property/utility records, deeds, land/property titles, structural plans, and other matrices for land surveying activities
• Follow state‑specific standards of practice to provide professional survey assistance that accounts for accurate survey data and determines conformance with applicable rules, standards, codes, boundaries, and construction specifications
• Assist with writing surveying reports summarizing site inspection and survey findings and conclusions; generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using photographs, sketches, calculations, software, spreadsheets, technical drawings, 2D/3D illustrations, and reports
• Work collaboratively with other professionals, engineers, scientists, project control, and technicians on assigned survey tasks
• Perform weekly instrument calibrations to maintain accuracy
• Ensure that both you and your crews comply daily with WSP and client specific safety guidelines and provide required safety documentation and records
• Engage in occasional contact with client personnel to schedule and coordinate project survey activities
• Remain current in latest survey knowledge, techniques, and practices
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• 5+ years of relevant post‑education experience in surveying with experience in easements, rights of way, plats, topographic surveys, boundary surveys, property descriptions, and GPS surveys
• Excellent communication skills, field note taking, good math skills, ability to work as a one‑person crew as necessary
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
• Physically mobile in and around construction sites and field assignments
• Ability to carry survey equipment and supplies in remote, rural or urban surroundings
• Experience with both public and private sector work (e.g., state, city, county, utility districts, and private land development)
• Competent self‑leadership with attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment
• Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening, including a valid Driver’s license
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of Leica‑based survey equipment (preferred, but not required)
• Knowledge of various DOT survey and SUE experience
• Transmission and distribution line survey experience
• Knowledge of FAA sUAS Part 107 requirements and sUAS pilot licensure with relevant flight experience
• Associate’s Degree in Surveying, Engineering Technology or related areas
• Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
