Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Surgical & Trauma Care Unit (3RC) in the Medical-Surgical Services Division. This 48-bed unit focuses on orthopedics, trauma, and spine care, offering a patient-centered approach and strong teamwork to support quality care.

Responsibilities include vital signs, phlebotomy and asepsis, post-procedure care, and assisting with admissions, transfers and discharges.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write and follow instructions.

Responsibilities

• Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
• Carries out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, and Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated.
• Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative skin preparation, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc.
• Participates in nursing care conferences; reports pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.
• Directly provides for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
• Turns, positions and ambulates patients.
• Transports patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
• Feeds patients, serves drinking water and nourishments, and records patients' intake.
• Assists patients with bedpans and urinals and records output.
