Job summary

• Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in the teaching field with demonstrated competency in teaching.
• Minimum of two years of experience as a surgical technologist in an operating room scrub role.
• Must meet all current qualifications required of a Surgical Technology Program Director as defined by applicable programmatic accreditation standards.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Demonstrated teaching ability or educational experience.
• Ability to satisfy clinical agency requirements, including background checks, drug screening, immunizations, and other onboarding requirements.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

• Teach didactic, laboratory, simulation, and clinical courses in various formats (day/evening/weekend/hybrid/online).
• Provide leadership for program accreditation and compliance with ARC/CAAHEP requirements.
• Oversee adjunct faculty, curriculum development, and assessment; ensure consistency of instruction and outcomes.
• Coordinate scheduling, program improvement initiatives, and student credentialing outcomes.
• Support student recruitment, retention, and success; maintain records of attendance and progress.
• Collaborate with clinical affiliates to secure and maintain student clinical sites and ensure eligibility.

Job Description

Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Faculty are dedicated to student success through teaching, mentoring, advising, and fostering critical thinking, independent learning, self-discovery, and problem-solving.

This faculty position serves as both Surgical Technology faculty and Surgical Technology Program Director. The faculty member is responsible for teaching didactic, laboratory, simulation, and clinical courses; providing leadership for program accreditation and compliance; maintaining program quality and outcomes; overseeing adjunct faculty; participating in curriculum development and assessment; and supporting student recruitment, retention, and success. Teaching assignments may include day, evening, weekend, hybrid, online, and clinical instruction and may occur at any Germanna campus, center, or clinical affiliate as needed. This position supports compliance with Virginia Community College System requirements and applicable programmatic accreditation standards.

In addition to fulfilling all responsibilities expected of Germanna full-time faculty, the Surgical Technology faculty member will be responsible for the following duties:

Teaching and Student Success:

• Normally teach 15 credit hours per semester during the academic year, with workload adjustments as approved for Program Director responsibilities.
• Teach surgical technology courses in classroom, laboratory, simulation, clinical, hybrid, and online formats.
• Utilize instructional strategies that promote active, collaborative, and inclusive learning.
• Align instruction with course learning outcomes and program outcomes.
• Provide timely feedback on assignments, assessments, and clinical performance.
• Respond promptly to student communications.
• Maintain regular and substantive interaction in all distance education courses.
• Promote student engagement, retention, completion, credential attainment, and employment readiness.
• Use the College learning management system and instructional technology effectively.
• Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, assessments, and student progress.

Program Leadership and Administration:

• Serve as the Surgical Technology Program Director.
• Maintain compliance with Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting ( ARC / STSA ) standards and Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs ( CAAHEP ) requirements.
• Lead accreditation activities, reporting, self‑studies, annual reviews, and site visit preparations.
• Monitor program effectiveness through assessment of student learning outcomes, credentialing examination results, graduate outcomes, and employer feedback.
• Coordinate program scheduling, curriculum review, and program improvement initiatives.
• Recruit, orient, supervise, mentor, and evaluate adjunct faculty teaching within the program.
• Ensure consistency of instruction, assessment, and student outcomes across all course sections.
• Coordinate laboratory, simulation, and clinical learning activities.
• Work collaboratively with clinical affiliates to secure and maintain student clinical sites.
• Ensure compliance with clinical agency requirements and student eligibility requirements.

Curriculum, Assessment, and Institutional Responsibilities:

• Participate in curriculum development, revision, assessment, and program review activities.
• Collaborate with faculty and staff across the College to support student success and program effectiveness.
• Participate in commencement, convocation, faculty meetings, committee work, recruitment activities, and community outreach.
• Submit required reports and documentation in a timely manner.
• Maintain knowledge of and compliance with College, VCCS , local, state, and federal policies and regulations.
• Participate in professional development and scholarly engagement activities that maintain disciplinary expertise and teaching effectiveness.
• Support Germanna’s culture of caring, inclusion, and equitable teaching practices.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Dean or designee.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

• Graduate of a CAAHEP -accredited Surgical Technology program.
• Current certification as a Surgical Technologist ( CST ) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting ( NBSTSA ) or other credential required by accreditation standards.
• Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in the teaching field with demonstrated competency
  in teaching field.
• Minimum of two years of experience as a surgical technologist in an operating room scrub role.
• Must meet all current qualifications required of a Surgical Technology Program Director as defined by applicable programmatic accreditation standards.
• Basic Life Support ( BLS ) certification.
• Demonstrated teaching ability or educational experience.

• Experience with curriculum development and program review.
• Experience teaching in online, hybrid, and simulation-based environments.
