Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. The hospital provides a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic and family support services to the residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. Harlem is the largest hospital in the area, capable of treating the most seriously ill. Harlem provides over 90 specialized ambulatory care services, dentistry and oral surgery, behavioral health services, and community substance abuse treatment.

Duties & Responsibilities

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Endoscopy Technician at Harlem Hospital is a vital member of the healthcare team, supporting physicians and nurses in performing minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. This role focuses on equipment preparation, patient care, and adherence to infection control protocols to ensure high-quality outcomes and patient safety.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Room and Equipment Preparation
    • Prepare and set up the endoscopy suite with all necessary supplies and equipment.
    • Ensure that endoscopy tools, including video systems and accessories, are functional and sterilized.
  • Procedure Support
    • Assist healthcare professionals during endoscopic procedures, including colonoscopies, gastroscopies, and bronchoscopies.
    • Maintain a sterile field and provide technical assistance to ensure seamless operations.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Sterilization
  • Clean, disinfect, and sterilize endoscopy equipment in compliance with infection control standards.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate repairs or replacements when needed.
  • Collect, label, and transport specimens to the laboratory following proper protocols.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of specimens and procedures.
  • Assist with patient positioning and comfort during procedures.
  • Monitor patient condition, report any concerns, and provide reassurance during the procedure.
  • Administrative Duties
  • Document procedures, patient vitals, and any adverse events in the medical record.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, including HIPAA regulations.
  • Safety and Emergency Preparedness
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and participate in emergency response training.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment to minimize risks .
Minimum Qualifications

Surgical Technologist - Level II 1. Holds and maintains a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA); or 2. Successful completion of a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists or successful completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization other than the NBSTSA, such as the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Special Note: Effective January 1, 2015, any employee who functions as a Surgical Technologist will be required to annually complete fifteen (15) hours of continuing education in order to remain qualified to perform the functions of a Surgical Technologist at an NYC Health + Hospitals facility.

Department Preferences
  • Certification as an Endoscopy Technician.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Previous experience in an endoscopy or healthcare setting, Preferred
  • Proficiency in operating endoscopy equipment- Preferred
  • Knowledge of infection control and patient safety standards.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
